A DVD player, DVD authoring program, or older media system may require DV footage as DVD-Video files rather than as a camera-original DV file. Converting it creates MPEG-2 DVD video inside VOB containers, but a playable DVD also requires navigation data and the surrounding VIDEO_TS structure.

What the DV format is

DV is a digital video format and codec used by MiniDV, DVCAM, and DVCPRO camcorders. Camera footage commonly appears as .dv, DV-AVI, or DV video inside a QuickTime MOV file; programs such as Adobe Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, Avid Media Composer, and FFmpeg can read or create it. DV normally uses intraframe compression at about 25 Mb/s for standard-definition video, so it is convenient for editing but occupies roughly 13 GB per hour.

What the VOB format is

VOB, or Video Object, is an MPEG program-stream file used by DVD-Video. It can contain MPEG-2 video, AC-3 or MPEG audio, subtitles, menus, and navigation packets. DVD authoring software stores VOB files in a VIDEO_TS folder, usually alongside IFO and BUP files; a standalone VOB made by a simple video converter may play in software but may not function as a proper DVD.

VOB is useful when the output must work with a DVD player or DVD-burning workflow. DVD-Video limits standard-definition video to formats such as NTSC 720×480 at 29.97 or 23.976 fps and PAL 720×576 at 25 fps, with compatible audio and bitrate settings.

How to actually convert DV to VOB

Using the online converter

You can convert the file for free on 101convert.com without installing software. Upload the DV file, choose VOB as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting file. This produces a converted video file; use DVD authoring software afterward if the target is a disc that must play in a hardware DVD player.

Using FFmpeg and DVD authoring tools

FFmpeg can encode DV to DVD-compliant MPEG-2, while dvdauthor creates the DVD-Video VOB structure. Choose ntsc-dvd for NTSC footage or pal-dvd for PAL footage:

ffmpeg -i input.dv -target ntsc-dvd -aspect 4:3 -c:a ac3 -b:a 192k dvd-video.mpg

For widescreen material, change -aspect 4:3 to -aspect 16:9. Then create the DVD files:

dvdauthor -o dvd -t dvd-video.mpg
dvdauthor -o dvd -T

The generated VOB files are in dvd/VIDEO_TS. To create an ISO image suitable for DVD-Video burning, use:

mkisofs -dvd-video -o video.iso dvd

On Windows or macOS, DVDStyler provides a graphical workflow: import the DV file, select the correct PAL or NTSC project standard, add menus if required, and use File → Burn DVD or the program's ISO output. It performs MPEG-2 encoding and DVD authoring rather than merely renaming the source file.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

DV-to-VOB conversion normally recompresses the video from DV into MPEG-2, so it is lossy. Keep the original DV file as the editing master and avoid repeated conversions. A single-layer DVD holds about 4.7 GB, and the combined video, audio, subtitles, and menus must remain within that capacity; lower the MPEG-2 bitrate when the program is too long.

Match the source television standard to the DVD project. Converting PAL to NTSC or NTSC to PAL changes frame timing and may require deinterlacing, scaling, or frame-rate conversion. Preserve interlacing for ordinary interlaced camcorder footage when the destination is a television DVD player; deinterlacing is appropriate only when the output will be viewed on progressive displays and the authoring workflow handles it correctly.

Do not rename input.dv to output.vob. The extension does not perform MPEG-2 encoding, and a hardware player expects DVD navigation files in addition to the VOB data.
