DV footage often needs conversion before it can be played by Blu-ray hardware, AVCHD devices, televisions, or media servers that expect an M2TS transport stream. The conversion also replaces DV's relatively large intraframe video with a more widely supported H.264 stream.

What the DV format is

DV is a digital video codec designed for MiniDV, DVCAM, and related tape cameras. It is commonly stored as raw .dv, AVI, or QuickTime MOV video and is created or exported by cameras, Adobe Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, Final Cut Pro, Vegas Pro, and older capture utilities.

DV uses intraframe compression, so every frame is encoded independently for editing, but standard DV data is still about 25 Mb/s before container overhead. PAL DV is normally 720×576 at 25 interlaced frames per second; NTSC DV is normally 720×480 at approximately 29.97 interlaced frames per second. The audio is usually uncompressed PCM at 48 kHz.

What the M2TS format is

M2TS is the filename extension commonly used for Blu-ray BDAV and AVCHD MPEG transport streams. It can contain H.264/AVC or MPEG-2 video, AAC or AC-3 audio, subtitles, and timestamp information that supports long recordings and multiple streams.

M2TS is suitable for Blu-ray workflows, AVCHD camcorders, many HDTVs, network media players, and media servers. H.264 encoding usually produces a much smaller file than DV at comparable viewing quality, but M2TS is a container rather than a single codec specification; changing the extension alone does not perform a conversion.

How to actually convert DV to M2TS

Using FFmpeg

FFmpeg is the most controllable desktop option. Install a current FFmpeg build, open a terminal in the folder containing the source, and inspect the input first:

ffprobe input.dv

Convert the file to H.264 video with AAC audio and M2TS packetization:

ffmpeg -i input.dv -c:v libx264 -preset medium -crf 18 -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:a aac -b:a 192k -ar 48000 -f mpegts -mpegts_m2ts_mode 1 output.m2ts

-crf 18 gives high quality; use a higher value such as 20–23 for a smaller file. The -mpegts_m2ts_mode 1 option requests 192-byte M2TS packets instead of ordinary 188-byte MPEG-TS packets. If the installed FFmpeg build does not recognize that option, remove it and keep the .m2ts extension, but check the target device because some devices require strict BDAV packetization.

For a progressive output file from interlaced DV, add a deinterlacing filter:

ffmpeg -i input.dv -vf bwdif=mode=send_frame:parity=auto -c:v libx264 -preset medium -crf 18 -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:a aac -b:a 192k -ar 48000 -f mpegts -mpegts_m2ts_mode 1 output.m2ts

Do not deinterlace when the destination supports interlaced playback and preserving the original fields is preferable. For a batch conversion on Windows, replace the filenames in a loop or run the command separately for each file; quote filenames containing spaces, for example -i "Tape 01.dv".

Using the online converter

You can convert the file on 101convert.com for free without installing software: select the DV input, choose M2TS as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting file. Upload limits, processing time, and supported DV containers depend on the service, so FFmpeg is preferable for large tape captures or settings that require exact control.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

This is a lossy video transcode because DV and H.264 use different compression methods. Keep the original DV capture as the archival master; use the M2TS file as a playback or delivery copy. A lower CRF value improves quality but increases size and encoding time.

DV footage is frequently interlaced and may have a 4:3 display aspect ratio despite its stored 720-pixel width. Preserve the source's field order and aspect ratio unless the destination requires progressive widescreen video. Incorrect deinterlacing or aspect-ratio signaling can cause combing artifacts or stretched faces.

An M2TS file made with FFmpeg is not automatically a Blu-ray disc structure. Disc authoring requires compliant video profiles, audio formats, bitrate limits, playlists, and menus; use a Blu-ray authoring application if the final target is a physical disc. Some older televisions accept M2TS only with H.264 High Profile and AC-3 audio, so replace AAC with -c:a ac3 -b:a 192k when that device's specification requires it.
