TREC recordings usually need conversion when a video editor, authoring system, or playback device accepts MPEG-2 video but cannot open TechSmith’s recording format. The conversion can also reduce dependency on Camtasia, but an M2V file contains video only, so any TREC audio must be exported separately.

What the TREC format is

TREC is TechSmith’s proprietary screen-recording container, created mainly by Camtasia Recorder and Camtasia. It can store captured desktop video, webcam footage, microphone audio, system audio, cursor data, and recording metadata in one file.

You typically encounter .trec files after recording a presentation, software demonstration, training session, or support video with Camtasia. TREC is designed for editing inside Camtasia rather than broad compatibility with video tools; FFmpeg and many general-purpose players cannot decode every TREC variant directly.

What the M2V format is

M2V is an MPEG-2 elementary video stream. It is used by DVD authoring software, broadcast and legacy video workflows, and systems that require MPEG-2 video without a container.

An M2V file normally contains no audio, subtitles, chapters, or metadata. Its advantages are predictable MPEG-2 compatibility and straightforward authoring integration. Use it when the destination specifically requests an MPEG-2 elementary stream; use an MPEG program stream or another container when video and audio must remain together.

How to convert TREC to M2V

Recommended workflow with Camtasia and FFmpeg

  1. Open the TREC file in Camtasia with File → Open.
  2. Place the required recording on the timeline, trim unwanted sections, and set the project dimensions and frame rate to match the intended MPEG-2 workflow.
  3. Export an intermediate video with Export → Local File. Choose MP4 and avoid unnecessary scaling or frame-rate conversion. Save it as recording.mp4.
  4. Install FFmpeg, then run this command in the folder containing the exported file:

ffmpeg -i recording.mp4 -an -c:v mpeg2video -pix_fmt yuv420p -q:v 2 -f mpeg2video recording.m2v

The -an option removes audio because M2V is video-only. -c:v mpeg2video selects MPEG-2 video, -pix_fmt yuv420p improves compatibility with DVD-era and hardware MPEG-2 systems, and -f mpeg2video forces elementary-stream output.

Online conversion

You can convert the file on 101convert.com for free without installing software. If the service cannot read the TREC file directly, first export it from Camtasia as MP4 and submit that intermediate file. Do not upload recordings containing confidential screen content unless the service’s handling policy is acceptable.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

Exporting through MP4 is usually necessary because TREC is proprietary; converting the file extension alone does not change its codec or structure. The intermediate export introduces one decode-and-encode stage, so use the highest-quality Camtasia export available before creating M2V.

M2V does not preserve Camtasia cursor effects, editable annotations, timeline data, or separate audio tracks. If audio is required, export it separately, for example as recording.wav, and author or mux it with the M2V according to the destination system. Do not simply rename the result to .mpg; an M2V elementary stream is not the same as an MPEG program stream.

For DVD authoring, use MPEG-2 settings required by the authoring application, including the correct frame size, frame rate, interlacing mode, bitrate, and aspect ratio. A generic MPEG-2 stream may play correctly in software but still fail a strict DVD or broadcast specification.
