Free online TREC to MP3 converter

Camtasia recordings must be exported when a podcast editor, transcription system, learning platform, or audio player requires an MP3 file instead of a .trec recording. The conversion keeps the audible content but removes screen video, webcam footage, cursor data, and Camtasia recording metadata.

What TREC files contain

TREC is TechSmith Camtasia's proprietary recording format. Camtasia Recorder uses it for screen captures that can include screen video, webcam video, microphone audio, system audio, cursor information, and capture metadata.

A TREC file is a source recording container, not a general-purpose audio format. Standard media players, DAWs, and command-line encoders such as FFmpeg normally cannot read it directly; use Camtasia to open or render the recording first.

Why export to MP3

MP3 is a lossy compressed audio format supported by media players, phones, car stereos, podcast software, browsers, and most audio editors. It is substantially smaller than uncompressed WAV and is suitable for speech, lectures, meetings, and most mixed audio.

An MP3 contains audio only. It cannot preserve the screen capture, webcam stream, captions, markers, cursor effects, separate recording tracks, or editable Camtasia data in the original TREC file.

Convert the recording in Camtasia

1. Copy the original .trec file to a working folder. Renaming it to .mp3 changes only the filename extension and does not convert the recording.
2. Open the recording in Camtasia, preferably the version that created it or a compatible later version. If necessary, import it through File → Import → Media.
3. Place the recording on the timeline and check microphone and system-audio tracks. Mute or remove unwanted tracks, trim unwanted sections, and correct levels before rendering.
4. Use Camtasia's audio export command. The exact menu name varies by release, but it may appear under Export, Share, or the local-production/export options.
5. Select MP3 when the installed version offers it, choose the destination and bitrate, then export.

If Camtasia exports WAV or M4A rather than MP3, render a WAV file when possible and encode that file with FFmpeg:

Audacity can also encode a WAV export through File → Export Audio after selecting MP3. FFmpeg and Audacity are conversion tools for Camtasia's exported audio, not reliable TREC import tools.

Upload only a copy; screen recordings may contain confidential visible content, notifications, passwords, or spoken information.

Quality and compatibility settings

For speech-only audio, use mono MP3 at 96–128 kbps. Use 160–192 kbps for stereo speech, system audio, music, or recordings with noticeable high-frequency detail. A higher bitrate cannot repair clipping, noise, distortion, or missing audio in the source recording.

Keep the original TREC file for editing and retain a WAV export when later audio processing is expected. Converting Camtasia's AAC-based M4A output to MP3 performs two lossy encodes; a WAV render avoids that additional lossy stage.

Keep the original sample rate when possible. 44.1 kHz or 48 kHz stereo MP3 is broadly compatible, while mono is preferable for speech when smaller files matter. If Camtasia cannot open the recording, use the Camtasia version that created it or ask the sender to export audio from their installation.
