Convert TREC to CAMREC

An older Camtasia Studio installation may require the legacy .camrec recording container, while newer Camtasia versions create .trec files. Camtasia has no supported direct TREC-to-CAMREC conversion, so the practical choices are exporting a standard video or re-recording playback with compatible legacy software.

What the TREC format is

TREC is TechSmith Camtasia's proprietary screen-recording container, used by Camtasia 9 and later Windows releases and by subsequent desktop versions. A TREC can contain captured screen video, microphone or system audio, cursor data, markers, and recording metadata. Camtasia users create TREC files with Camtasia Recorder and edit them in Camtasia; ordinary media players and most video editors do not open the container directly.

What the CAMREC format is

CAMREC is the older proprietary recording container generated by Camtasia Studio 8 and earlier Windows versions. It can retain screen video, audio, cursor information, and other capture data for editing in compatible legacy Camtasia software. Its advantage is compatibility with those older Camtasia workflows, not broad playback support. CAMREC is obsolete and is not a general-purpose video format.

How to convert TREC to CAMREC

Changing the extension does not convert the file, and current Camtasia versions do not provide a normal Export → CAMREC command. Use the original TREC in a compatible Camtasia installation whenever possible.

1. Open the TREC in Camtasia. Use File → Open, or import the recording into a Camtasia project. The exact menu names vary by release, and files may not be interchangeable between Windows and Mac versions.
2. Export an ordinary video when the recipient only needs playback or editing in another application. Choose the current release's local video export command, such as File → Export → Local File, and select MP4. Preserve the source resolution and frame rate where possible; configure audio rather than relying on a low-quality default.
3. Re-record the exported video only when a valid CAMREC container is mandatory. Install a licensed Camtasia Studio 8-era Recorder on a compatible Windows system, play the exported MP4 at its native size, and capture the playback with the Recorder. Its recording settings should match the playback resolution and frame rate. Stop the capture and save the resulting recording as .camrec.

The third procedure is a workaround, not a container conversion. The new CAMREC contains a screen capture of the exported video and newly captured audio; it does not contain the original TREC's editable timeline, callouts, markers, source cursor data, or recording metadata. Any cursor and callout graphics already visible in the playback become ordinary pixels.

Quality and compatibility limitations

Exporting to MP4 and capturing that playback adds another encoding and capture stage, which can reduce text sharpness, frame accuracy, and audio quality. Use the highest suitable export quality, match the Recorder's capture dimensions and frame rate, disable desktop display scaling when possible, and avoid other applications generating notifications or sound during capture.

Legacy Camtasia Studio may not install or run correctly on current Windows versions, and CAMREC support is limited to older Camtasia releases. Keep the original TREC and project files as the archival master. If the recipient can use a newer Camtasia version, send the TREC instead of creating a CAMREC.

Online converters and other software

Reputable online video converters generally cannot convert TREC into CAMREC because both are proprietary Camtasia recording containers, not ordinary codec-based video files. Services that merely rename .trec to .camrec produce an invalid file. Uploading a screen recording to an unknown service can also expose confidential desktop content. Camtasia is the appropriate desktop software for opening and exporting TREC; an online service is not a reliable option for creating CAMREC.
