What the TREC format is

TREC is TechSmith’s proprietary recording format, created by Camtasia Recorder and used by Camtasia for screen captures with recorded audio, cursor data, and editing metadata. You commonly encounter it after recording a presentation, software demonstration, training session, or support video in Camtasia.

TREC is not a broadly supported delivery format. Its extra recording data is useful inside Camtasia but may prevent direct playback or conversion with general-purpose media tools such as FFmpeg.

What the WEBM format is

WEBM is an open multimedia container designed primarily for web video. It commonly contains VP8 or VP9 video and Opus audio, and is supported by modern browsers, web players, and many video-editing applications.

WEBM is useful when you need browser playback, HTML5 embedding, or a royalty-free format with efficient compression. It is less universally supported than MP4 in older desktop software, televisions, and some mobile applications.

How to actually convert TREC to WEBM

Using Camtasia and FFmpeg

1. Open the .trec file in Camtasia. If it does not open by double-clicking, start Camtasia and use File → Open or import the recording into a new project.
2. Export the recording to a standard intermediate video, preferably MP4, using Export → Local File or the equivalent export command for your Camtasia version. Select the required resolution and frame rate.
3. Install FFmpeg, place the exported file in a convenient folder, and run:

ffmpeg -i recording.mp4 -c:v libvpx-vp9 -crf 30 -b:v 0 -c:a libopus -b:a 128k recording.webm

The command encodes video as VP9 and audio as Opus. Lower the CRF value for better quality and a larger file; values around 24–30 are practical for screen recordings. If the exported file has no audio, use:

ffmpeg -i recording.mp4 -c:v libvpx-vp9 -crf 30 -b:v 0 -an recording.webm

Exporting through Camtasia renders the recording, so editable cursor behavior, separate tracks, callouts, and other project data are flattened into the video. Keep the original TREC and Camtasia project if later editing is required.

For browser delivery, test the WEBM in the target browser and verify audio synchronization, screen text readability, frame rate, and file size. WEBM is not a substitute for MP4 when compatibility with older players or hardware devices is required.
