JVC Everio camcorders save some recordings as TOD files, while browsers and web applications commonly accept WEBM instead. Converting the MPEG-2 camera footage to WEBM makes it suitable for browser playback, web sharing, and smaller browser-oriented archives.

What the TOD format is

TOD is a video container used mainly by JVC Everio HDD and memory-card camcorders. These cameras typically store MPEG-2 video with interlaced footage and camera-recorded audio, often at HD resolutions such as 1440×1080.

TOD files are encountered after copying recordings directly from an Everio camcorder or its storage media. Some media players identify the content as an MPEG transport stream despite the .tod extension. The format is designed for camera recording rather than browser delivery, so many web players do not support it directly.

What the WEBM format is

WEBM is a Matroska-based container intended primarily for web video. It normally contains VP8, VP9, or AV1 video and Vorbis or Opus audio, with VP9 and Opus providing a practical quality and compatibility combination for current browsers.

WEBM is useful for HTML5 playback, web pages, chat platforms, and applications that need an open web-oriented format. It can be smaller than the original MPEG-2 TOD file at comparable visual quality, but conversion requires re-encoding because MPEG-2 video cannot simply be renamed or copied into a standard WEBM file.

How to convert TOD to WEBM

FFmpeg is the most controllable desktop method. Install a current FFmpeg build, open a terminal in the folder containing the recording, and run:

ffmpeg -i input.tod -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a? -c:v libvpx-vp9 -crf 32 -b:v 0 -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:a libopus -b:a 128k output.webm

Replace input.tod and output.webm with the actual filenames. The VP9 constant-quality setting uses lower CRF values for higher quality and larger files; a range of 28–36 is a useful starting point. Use -crf 28 for better preservation or -crf 36 for a smaller file.

If the camcorder recording is visibly interlaced, add a deinterlacing filter before the codec options:

ffmpeg -i input.tod -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a? -vf yadif=mode=send_frame:parity=auto:deint=interlaced -c:v libvpx-vp9 -crf 32 -b:v 0 -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:a libopus -b:a 128k output.webm

-map 0:a? keeps the command working when a TOD file has no audio stream. FFmpeg preserves the source dimensions and frame rate unless the filter or additional options change them.

For a conversion without installing software, upload the file to 101convert.com, choose WEBM as the output format, and download the converted file. The service performs the required video and audio re-encoding online for free.

Quality and compatibility limitations

Because TOD normally contains MPEG-2 and WEBM requires VP8, VP9, or AV1, the conversion is lossy and can reduce detail during a second compression stage. Keep the original TOD files as masters, and test the resulting WEBM on the intended browser or application.

Interlaced Everio footage can show comb-shaped edges when played progressively; use the yadif option when that occurs. Deinterlacing improves web playback but discards some temporal detail. WEBM supports common browser video workflows, but some older players, editing programs, and hardware devices support MP4/H.264 more consistently.
