JVC Everio camcorders created TOD video files, but many editors, players, and Apple-oriented workflows expect a MOV container. Converting the recording makes it easier to edit, share, or archive without relying on the original camera software.

What the TOD format is

TOD is a video container used mainly by JVC Everio high-definition camcorders. It commonly contains MPEG-2 video and MPEG audio or AC-3 audio in a transport-stream structure, with filenames such as 0A01.TOD. You may encounter TOD files after copying recordings from an Everio camera or its removable storage; some JVC software also supplied companion files for playback and scene management.

What the MOV format is

MOV is a multimedia container developed by Apple and supported by QuickTime, macOS, Windows applications, and most professional video editors. It can hold video and audio encoded with codecs such as H.264, HEVC, ProRes, AAC, and PCM. MOV is useful when an editing application specifically requests QuickTime media or when you want a container commonly recognized by Apple software.

How to convert TOD to MOV

Using FFmpeg

FFmpeg is the most controllable desktop method and runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux:

  1. Install FFmpeg from the official FFmpeg project or your operating system's package manager.
  2. Place the TOD file in an accessible folder and open a terminal or Command Prompt there.
  3. Run ffmpeg -i input.TOD -c:v libx264 -preset medium -crf 18 -c:a aac -b:a 192k output.mov.
  4. Replace input.TOD with the actual filename and open output.mov in the target editor or player.

This command decodes the original MPEG-2 stream and creates H.264 video with AAC audio, a combination supported by most current software. Use -crf 22 for a smaller file with lower quality, or -crf 16 for higher quality and a larger file. To preserve the original video stream when the destination software accepts MPEG-2 inside MOV, try ffmpeg -i input.TOD -c:v copy -c:a aac -b:a 192k output.mov; stream copying is faster and avoids video re-encoding, but it may produce a file with limited compatibility.

Using the built-in online converter

You can convert the file for free on 101convert.com without installing software. Select the TOD file, choose MOV as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting file when processing finishes. Avoid uploading recordings containing private or sensitive footage to any online service.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

Re-encoding cannot restore detail already lost in the TOD recording. The -crf setting controls H.264 quality, while the output frame size and frame rate normally remain based on the source. Converting to MOV changes the container and, with the FFmpeg command above, also changes the codecs; it does not automatically improve resolution.

Check the output for interlacing because some Everio recordings use interlaced MPEG-2. If horizontal combing appears during motion, deinterlace during conversion with ffmpeg -i input.TOD -vf yadif -c:v libx264 -crf 18 -c:a aac -b:a 192k output.mov. If the TOD file has a separate audio track or unusual metadata, FFmpeg may omit camera-specific scene information even though the playable video is preserved.
