How to convert crdownload to mov file

  • Video

A completed video may need to be delivered as MOV for QuickTime, Final Cut Pro, or a particular editing workflow, while Chrome has left the download with a .crdownload suffix. The download must be complete before conversion; changing the suffix of a partial file cannot restore missing video or audio data.

What a CRDOWNLOAD file means

.crdownload is a temporary filename suffix used by Google Chrome and Chromium-based browsers while downloading a file. It is not a video container or codec: the file may contain partially downloaded MP4, WebM, or another type of data.

Chrome normally removes the suffix and restores the original filename when the download finishes. A file named holiday.mov.crdownload is intended to become holiday.mov and needs no conversion if the download completed but the final rename failed. A file named holiday.mp4.crdownload must first be completed, then converted if MOV is required. CRDOWNLOAD files are mainly encountered by people downloading videos through Chrome or other Chromium-based browsers.

What MOV provides

MOV is a multimedia container developed by Apple for QuickTime. It can hold video, audio, subtitles, timecode, and metadata, with codecs such as H.264, HEVC, ProRes, AAC, and PCM.

MOV is common in macOS and Apple-oriented workflows, video editing, camera production, and professional interchange. Its compatibility depends on the codecs inside the container, not just the .mov extension. MOV is not automatically smaller or higher quality than MP4; the container change and any codec conversion are separate operations.

Complete and identify the download

  1. Open Chrome's downloads page with Ctrl+J on Windows or Linux, or Command+Shift+J on macOS.
  2. Use Resume if Chrome offers it. If the download failed and cannot resume, download the source again rather than converting the partial file.
  3. Wait for Chrome to report completion and check the download folder. The filename before .crdownload normally identifies the original extension, such as .mp4 or .webm.
  4. If the suffix remains after successful completion, make a copy and remove only .crdownload. Do not rename .mp4 or .webm directly to .mov; that changes the name, not the container. Use MediaInfo, ffprobe, or the file command if the original type is unclear.

A partial file may expose a playable fragment after renaming, but it remains incomplete. Missing indexes, final metadata, frames, or audio can cause conversion errors, missing duration, or abrupt playback.

Convert with FFmpeg

FFmpeg provides local conversion on Windows, macOS, and Linux. Rename a demonstrably completed file to its real source extension, then run the appropriate command in a terminal.

To change the container without re-encoding compatible streams:

ffmpeg -i "input.mp4" -map 0 -c copy "output.mov"

Stream copying is fast and preserves the source quality, but it works only when the video, audio, and other streams are supported by the MOV container and the target application. If it fails or produces an incompatible file, re-encode:

ffmpeg -i "input.mp4" -c:v libx264 -pix_fmt yuv420p -preset medium -crf 18 -c:a aac -b:a 192k -movflags +faststart "output.mov"

This creates H.264 video and AAC audio, a broadly supported combination. Lower CRF values generally produce larger H.264 files with higher quality; the suitable value depends on the source and intended use. Re-encoding can reduce quality and may increase or decrease the file size.

For editing workflows that specifically require an intraframe codec, a ProRes MOV can be created with FFmpeg:

ffmpeg -i "input.mp4" -c:v prores_ks -profile:v 3 -c:a pcm_s16le "output.mov"

ProRes and PCM produce much larger files than H.264 and AAC. They do not restore quality lost in the original download.

Convert without installing software

After the browser download is complete, make a copy, remove the .crdownload suffix if necessary, and upload the video to 101convert.com. Select MOV as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting file. An unfinished CRDOWNLOAD file cannot be reliably repaired by an online converter; use a local conversion for confidential footage or files that should not be uploaded.

Check compatibility and quality

Open the resulting MOV in the application that will use it and verify duration, video, audio, frame rate, and synchronization. Use ffprobe "output.mov" or MediaInfo to inspect its codecs and streams.

If the output is shorter than expected, lacks audio, or FFmpeg reports invalid or truncated input, obtain the complete source again. Preserve the completed original and create the MOV as a separate file, because repeated lossy re-encoding progressively reduces quality.

Simply put, it is impossible to convert CRDOWNLOAD to MOV directly.
Thus, there is no so-called crdownload to mov converter or a free online .crdownload to .mov conversion tool.
