IFV recordings from some CCTV/DVR systems may not open in standard video editors or playback devices. Converting them to M2TS makes the footage usable by Blu-ray and AVCHD-compatible software, media players, and archival workflows.

What the IFV format is

In the Video category, IFV usually identifies a proprietary surveillance-video container produced by certain DVR and CCTV systems. The file can contain a camera stream, timestamps, audio, watermark data, or vendor-specific metadata, and its internal codec varies by manufacturer.

IFV files are commonly encountered after copying recordings from a security recorder, exporting incident footage, or recovering video from a DVR backup. A normal media player may not recognize the file because the extension does not describe a standard, widely supported container. The DVR manufacturer’s playback utility or an IFV-specific player may be required to open and export it.

What the M2TS format is

M2TS is the filename extension for Blu-ray BDAV MPEG-2 Transport Stream files. It is also used by AVCHD camcorders and some video cameras. M2TS supports timestamped transport streams containing video, audio, subtitles, and multiple program streams.

The format is suitable for Blu-ray authoring, AVCHD-compatible devices, broadcast-style transport, and editing applications that accept MPEG transport streams. M2TS is a container, not a single codec: H.264/AVC, MPEG-2 video, and several audio formats can be stored in it. A file renamed from .ifv to .m2ts is not converted; the video and audio streams must be decoded or remuxed into a valid transport stream.

How to actually convert IFV to M2TS

Use the built-in online converter

  1. Open the IFV-to-M2TS converter on 101convert.com.
  2. Upload the .ifv file and select M2TS as the output format.
  3. Start the conversion and download the resulting .m2ts file when processing finishes.
  4. Play the output from beginning to end and check that the image, audio, duration, and timestamp information meet your needs.

Proprietary IFV variants may not be readable by a general converter. If the upload is rejected or produces a file without video, export the recording to a standard format with the DVR manufacturer’s software first.

Export IFV, then create M2TS with FFmpeg

Open the recording in the DVR’s viewer and use its export function, commonly found under File → Export, Backup → Export, or Save as AVI. Choose a standard container such as AVI or MP4, disable playback-only encryption if the software provides that option, and verify the exported file before converting it.

For a readable source file, inspect the streams with:

ffprobe exported.avi

If the source already contains H.264 video and AAC or AC-3 audio, try remuxing without re-encoding:

ffmpeg -i exported.avi -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a? -c copy -f mpegts converted.m2ts

Use re-encoding when the source codecs or stream layout are incompatible:

ffmpeg -i exported.avi -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a? -c:v libx264 -preset medium -crf 20 -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:a ac3 -b:a 192k -f mpegts converted.m2ts

The first command is faster and preserves the original streams, but it may produce an M2TS file that a particular Blu-ray authoring program rejects. The second creates widely supported H.264 video and AC-3 audio but changes the compression and may take considerably longer.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

  • Conversion cannot restore detail lost by the CCTV recorder’s original compression, low resolution, night-mode noise, or frame-rate reduction.
  • Surveillance timestamps may be overlays burned into the picture, metadata stored separately, or information rendered only by the vendor’s player. A generic export may preserve the overlay but discard searchable event metadata.
  • Some DVR exports are encrypted or accompanied by an index file. Keep the related files together until export is complete, and use the recorder software if the standalone IFV file cannot be decoded.
  • M2TS does not automatically mean Blu-ray compliant. Blu-ray authoring requires approved resolutions, frame rates, codec profiles, audio formats, and bitrate limits; a converted file may still need authoring or transcoding.
  • Check the result with ffprobe converted.m2ts and test it in the exact player or editor that will use it. Do not delete the original IFV until the output has been verified.
