What the DAV format is
DAV is a proprietary digital video format used mainly by Dahua CCTV recorders and by compatible OEM DVR and NVR equipment. Surveillance software such as Dahua Smart Player opens DAV recordings and may provide playback, watermark verification, timestamp display, and export functions.
You usually encounter DAV files after copying footage from a recorder, downloading an incident from a surveillance interface, or removing a recorder's storage media. DAV is not a standard MPEG container: its video codec, metadata, audio handling, and sometimes encryption can prevent ordinary players and encoders from reading it directly.
What the VCD format is
Video CD is a disc specification rather than just a filename extension. A compliant VCD normally contains an MPEG-1 system stream with MPEG-1 video, 44.1 kHz audio, and a disc structure created by a VCD authoring tool. Video stored on the disc commonly appears as AVSEQ01.DAT, while a computer-side disc image commonly uses .bin and .cue files.
VCD is useful for older DVD/VCD players, embedded playback hardware, and archival workflows that require a standardized optical-disc layout. Its fixed low bitrate makes it widely compatible, but image quality is substantially lower than DVD, SVCD, or modern MP4 video.
How to actually convert DAV to VCD
Option 1: use the built-in online converter
- Open the DAV-to-VCD converter on 101convert.com.
- Upload the DAV recording and select VCD as the output format.
- Start the conversion, then download the resulting file.
- If the result is a video file rather than a disc image, author it as a VCD and burn the resulting image with CD-writing software.
This route avoids installing software, but a large CCTV recording may take time to upload and process. Do not upload evidence or sensitive surveillance footage unless the storage and privacy requirements of the recording permit it.
Option 2: export from the recorder software, then encode and author locally
- Install the DAV player supplied for the recorder model, such as Dahua Smart Player, and open the recording.
- Use the program's export or conversion function, commonly found under File → Export or a right-click menu. Export to MP4 or AVI; the exact menu name varies by Smart Player version and recorder firmware.
- If the exported file already meets VCD specifications, proceed to authoring. Otherwise, create an MPEG-1 VCD stream with FFmpeg. For PAL material, use:
ffmpeg -i exported.mp4 -target pal-vcd vcd-video.mpg
For NTSC material, use:
ffmpeg -i exported.mp4 -target ntsc-vcd vcd-video.mpg
PAL VCD uses 352×288 video at 25 frames per second; NTSC VCD uses 352×240 at approximately 29.97 frames per second. The FFmpeg VCD targets also set the MPEG-1 video bitrate, MPEG audio parameters, and system-stream settings expected by VCD authoring tools.
- Author the MPEG stream as a VCD image with VCDImager:
vcdimager -t vcd2 -c surveillance.cue -b surveillance.bin vcd-video.mpg
Burn the matching surveillance.cue and surveillance.bin files as an image with compatible disc-writing software. Do not copy the MPEG file to a blank CD as ordinary data; a VCD player requires the authored Video CD structure.
Quality, compatibility, and limitations
Converting DAV to VCD cannot restore detail that was lost in the original CCTV recording. VCD encoding reduces resolution and normally recompresses the video, so retain the original DAV and the exported master when the footage may be used as evidence.
VCD capacity is measured by playback time rather than normal computer-file capacity: approximately 74 minutes fit on a 650 MB disc and approximately 80 minutes on a 700 MB disc. Longer recordings must be split into multiple titles or discs. Very long surveillance files may also need trimming before authoring.
A DAV file that Smart Player cannot open may be incomplete, recorder-encrypted, or tied to a proprietary export package. Rename-only operations do not convert it, and FFmpeg may fail until the recording is exported through the recorder manufacturer's software. Check the source recording's frame rate and television standard before choosing PAL or NTSC, because mismatching the standard can cause playback problems on older hardware.
