What the ISMV format is

ISMV is a fragmented MP4 media file used by Microsoft Smooth Streaming. It stores encoded audio or video in media fragments that a server can deliver adaptively, while an associated .ism manifest describes the available streams and bitrates.

Microsoft Expression Encoder and IIS Media Services workflows commonly create ISMV files. You may encounter them in Smooth Streaming publishing folders, archived web-video packages, or exports from older Microsoft encoding systems. An ISMV file can use H.264 video and AAC audio, but the exact codecs depend on the encoder settings.

What the MPG format is

MPG, also written MPEG or .mpeg, usually contains an MPEG program stream with MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 video and an MPEG audio layer such as MP2. Unlike an ISMV fragment, it is intended as a self-contained playback file rather than one part of an adaptive streaming set.

MPG is supported by many older media players, nonlinear editors, broadcast tools, set-top boxes, and DVD-authoring applications. MPEG-2 program streams are useful when compatibility matters more than file size; they generally require more storage than modern H.264 or H.265 files at comparable visual quality.

How to convert ISMV to MPG

FFmpeg is the most controllable desktop option. It can usually read an unencrypted ISMV directly, including a fragmented MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio.

1. Install FFmpeg and place the ISMV file in a folder with a simple filename such as input.ismv.
2. Inspect its streams with ffprobe -hide_banner input.ismv. Check the video resolution, frame rate, audio presence, and source duration.
3. For broad MPEG-2 compatibility, run ffmpeg -i input.ismv -c:v mpeg2video -q:v 3 -c:a mp2 -b:a 192k -f vob output.mpg.
4. If the target specifically expects an MPEG program stream rather than a DVD-style VOB stream, use ffmpeg -i input.ismv -c:v mpeg2video -q:v 3 -c:a mp2 -b:a 192k -f mpeg output.mpg.
5. Play output.mpg in the target application and verify synchronization, interlacing, resolution, and audio playback.

The commands re-encode the media, which is normally necessary because MPG expects MPEG video and MPEG audio. For a smaller file or a device limited to MPEG-1, replace mpeg2video with mpeg1video; quality and maximum resolution will be lower.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

Changing the extension does not convert the media: renaming input.ismv to output.mpg leaves the file in fragmented MP4 form and will not fix compatibility.

Because MPEG-2 is a lossy encoding format, conversion can reduce quality, especially when the source is already highly compressed. Use a lower -q:v value for higher FFmpeg quality at the cost of a larger file, or specify a bitrate such as -b:v 6000k when the receiving device has a known limit.

Some ISMV files are only fragments and do not contain a complete presentation. If FFmpeg reports missing metadata, duration, or initialization data, locate the matching Smooth Streaming manifest and package rather than converting the fragment alone. DRM-protected ISMV content cannot be converted without authorized decryption.
