Free online ISMV to AVI converter

AVI is still required by some older editing applications, industrial video systems, and playback devices that do not accept Smooth Streaming media. Converting an ISMV file also produces a conventional file that is easier to share, archive, or import into desktop software.

What the ISMV format is

ISMV is a fragmented MPEG-4 container used by Microsoft IIS Smooth Streaming. It normally contains H.264/AVC video and AAC audio divided into fragments for adaptive streaming, rather than a single conventional movie file.

You may encounter .ismv files in Smooth Streaming publishing workflows, media archives, or exports created for Microsoft IIS Media Services. The extension identifies the container and streaming structure; it does not guarantee one specific video or audio codec.

What the AVI format is

AVI is an older Microsoft container supported by many Windows applications, editors, capture systems, and hardware players. Its broad compatibility is useful when a target program rejects MP4 or fragmented MP4 files.

AVI does not require one fixed codec, but compatibility is usually best with MPEG-4 Part 2 video and MP3 audio. Lossless codecs such as FFV1 are better for preservation but may not work in older software and can create very large files.

How to convert ISMV to AVI

Using FFmpeg

Install FFmpeg, place the ISMV file in an accessible folder, and run:

ffmpeg -i input.ismv -c:v mpeg4 -q:v 3 -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:a libmp3lame -q:a 2 output.avi

This decodes the fragmented MP4 streams and re-encodes them into an AVI-compatible combination. Lower values for -q:v improve video quality and increase file size; values around 3–5 are a practical range. The audio setting -q:a 2 selects high-quality variable-bitrate MP3 encoding.

If the source has no audio stream, use:

ffmpeg -i input.ismv -c:v mpeg4 -q:v 3 -pix_fmt yuv420p -an output.avi

To inspect the streams before converting, run:

ffprobe input.ismv

If the destination accepts FFV1, a lossless alternative is:

ffmpeg -i input.ismv -c:v ffv1 -c:a pcm_s16le output.avi

Quality and compatibility limits

A conversion using MPEG-4 and MP3 is a lossy transcode: the ISMV streams are decoded and compressed again, so quality cannot exceed the source and may decline slightly. Remuxing the original H.264 and AAC streams directly into AVI is generally unsuitable because AVI support for those stream types is inconsistent.

Some ISMV files are encrypted, incomplete, or dependent on a Smooth Streaming manifest and separate media fragments. FFmpeg cannot convert protected content without the required decryption keys, and a single fragment may not contain the complete recording. Use the complete media file or reconstruct the stream from its original publishing set first.
