Convert CAMPROJ to AVI

Render Camtasia CAMPROJ projects as AVI for legacy players, editors, and analysis systems.

We can't read CAMPROJ files yet, so this conversion isn't available. If you can export your work to one of these formats - or others - we'll turn it into AVI:

How to convert camproj to avi file

  • Video

An AVI-only legacy player, editor, or analysis system requires the Camtasia project to be rendered as a finished video first. Exporting also makes the recording usable outside Camtasia, while an online converter can handle the rendered video when desktop software is unavailable.

What the CAMPROJ format is

.camproj is an older TechSmith Camtasia Studio project format. It stores the editable timeline, cuts, annotations, transitions, audio settings, and references to imported recordings and other media; it is not a self-contained movie file.

Open the project in Camtasia, normally the version that created it or a compatible newer release. Keep every referenced recording, image, and audio file at its expected path. Copying only project.camproj can cause missing-media errors. Newer Camtasia releases may not open older projects fully, so check the timeline before exporting.

What the AVI format is

AVI is a Microsoft multimedia container that can hold different video and audio codecs, including uncompressed video, FFV1, MPEG-4 Part 2, PCM, and MP3. It remains common in older Windows software, video-analysis systems, and some editing workflows, but it is less space-efficient and less consistently supported on modern devices than MP4.

The .avi extension does not specify compatibility. The receiving application must support the chosen video codec, audio codec, frame size, frame rate, pixel format, and audio sample rate.

How to convert CAMPROJ to AVI

  1. Open the .camproj file in Camtasia and confirm that all media, captions, cursor effects, and timeline edits are correct.
  2. Use File → Export or, in older Camtasia Studio releases, Produce and Share. If the installed version offers AVI as an output format, select it and choose a codec supported by the target application. AVI output is version-dependent; current Camtasia releases generally emphasize MP4 rather than AVI.
  3. If AVI is not available, export a high-quality MP4 from Camtasia, then encode that file with FFmpeg. A compact AVI using MPEG-4 Part 2 video and MP3 audio can be created with:

ffmpeg -i camtasia-export.mp4 -c:v mpeg4 -q:v 3 -c:a libmp3lame -b:a 192k output.avi

For a lossless second encode, where the receiving software supports FFV1, use:

ffmpeg -i camtasia-export.mp4 -c:v ffv1 -level 3 -c:a pcm_s16le output.avi

FFmpeg is appropriate when the required codec must be specified precisely. GUI applications built on FFmpeg, such as Shutter Encoder, can provide the same conversion without command-line syntax. Verify the resulting file in the application that will receive it.

CloudConvert and Convertio can convert the exported MP4 to AVI through a browser. They normally cannot reconstruct a CAMPROJ project because its timeline and referenced media belong to Camtasia. Uploading screen recordings to a third-party service may also violate confidentiality requirements, and large files can take considerably longer to transfer.

Quality and compatibility limits

Exporting H.264 MP4 and then encoding AVI adds another encoding stage; it cannot restore detail already lost in the MP4. Use direct AVI export when the Camtasia version provides it. Otherwise, export at the required frame size and frame rate with the highest practical quality, and avoid unnecessary scaling.

FFV1 with PCM preserves the exported frames and audio but can produce very large files and requires FFV1 support. MPEG-4 Part 2 with MP3 is smaller and suits some legacy software, but it is not interchangeable with H.264 and may be rejected by applications expecting a particular codec. Uncompressed AVI is also large and may exceed the 4 GB limit of older AVI implementations.

Before encoding, obtain the target system's exact requirements for codec, frame rate, dimensions, audio format, and pixel format. Screen recordings containing small text should retain their original dimensions and frame rate whenever possible.
