Convert TVS to AVI

A TeamViewer recording may need conversion when a legacy editor, Windows application, archive, or delivery system accepts AVI but not TeamViewer’s native TVS file. The original TVS should be retained because AVI export may discard TeamViewer-specific session data.

What the TVS format is

TVS is TeamViewer’s proprietary recording format for remote-control sessions, support sessions, presentations, and remote-desktop activity. It is created by TeamViewer’s session-recording feature and may include the recorded screen, timing information, and audio when audio recording was enabled.

TVS is designed for playback in TeamViewer, not for general-purpose media software. VLC, FFmpeg, and most online converters generally cannot demultiplex and decode its proprietary recording structure, so changing .tvs to .avi does not convert the file.

What the AVI format is

AVI (Audio Video Interleave) is a Microsoft container used by older Windows software, video editors, media players, and capture systems. It can contain different video and audio codecs, so an AVI file’s playback compatibility, size, and quality depend on the codecs selected during export.

AVI is useful for legacy workflows that reject TVS. It is usually less efficient than MP4 for web delivery because common AVI codecs produce larger files and provide less modern metadata and streaming support.

How to convert TVS to AVI

Use the TeamViewer desktop application that supports recorded-session playback, preferably the same major release or a compatible release used to create the recording:

1. Open TeamViewer.
2. Choose Extras → Play recorded session, or open the equivalent recorded-session command in your release.
3. Select the .tvs file and start playback.
4. In the playback window, choose Convert, Convert recorded session, or the corresponding AVI export command.
5. Select AVI, choose the destination and available codec or quality settings, then start the export.
6. Play the exported file and check the image, timing, and audio before deleting or moving the TVS original.

TeamViewer menu names and export options vary by release and operating system. If playback works but no conversion command appears, install a compatible TeamViewer desktop version rather than renaming the extension or opening the file in a generic converter.

There is no dependable general-purpose FFmpeg command for direct TVS conversion because FFmpeg normally lacks TeamViewer TVS support. VLC and ordinary file converters have the same limitation.

Fallback capture method

If a compatible TeamViewer release cannot export the recording, play the TVS file in TeamViewer and capture the playback window with OBS Studio or another screen recorder. Record to a supported intermediate format such as MKV or MP4, then use a desktop transcoder such as FFmpeg or HandBrake if an AVI file is mandatory. This is a re-recording, not a direct conversion: it can reduce resolution and image quality, introduce playback timing differences, omit session audio, and include window controls or other interface elements.

Online converters and privacy

No mainstream online converter should be assumed to support TVS. Services such as CloudConvert or Convertio are suitable only if their current input-format list explicitly names TVS; support for AVI as an output format does not imply support for TVS as an input.

Uploading a remote-support recording is often inappropriate because it may contain passwords, personal information, customer records, or confidential documents. Use TeamViewer’s local export instead, and use an online service only after verifying TVS support and obtaining permission to upload the recording.

Quality and compatibility limits

AVI is a container, not a single codec. Choose the most broadly supported codec offered by the TeamViewer export dialog, and test the result on the system that will receive it. The exported dimensions may follow the playback or display size, so avoid resizing the playback window during export and verify the output resolution afterward.

Conversion can preserve the visible recording while losing TeamViewer-specific features such as session navigation, event information, and other recording metadata. Keep the original TVS file as the archival copy.
