How to convert n3r to avi file

  • Video

Panasonic surveillance recorders create N3R files that ordinary video editors and players often cannot open. Converting the recording to AVI makes it usable in older Windows applications or systems that require an AVI input, but the usual workflow is N3R to MP4 first, followed by MP4 to AVI.

What the N3R format is

N3R is a proprietary video format used by Panasonic security recorders and surveillance software. An N3R export may retain recorder-specific information such as the camera channel, date and time, and playback or authentication data that standard media applications do not understand.

Because N3R is not a normal AVI or MPEG container, changing recording.n3r to recording.avi does not convert it. VLC, Windows Media Player, and FFmpeg generally cannot decode N3R directly; use Panasonic software compatible with the recorder and the file version.

What the AVI format is

AVI is a Microsoft container supported by many older Windows players, editors, and evidence-review applications. An AVI file can contain different video and audio codecs, so an AVI extension alone does not guarantee compatibility.

AVI is useful when a receiving program specifically requires it. It is usually less space-efficient than MP4 with H.264 or H.265, and it may discard Panasonic-specific metadata or timestamp functions during export.

Convert N3R to AVI with Panasonic software

  1. Install the Panasonic playback or management program supplied for the recorder. WV-ASM200 can open and export supported Panasonic recordings, but support depends on its version, the recorder model, and the N3R file type. Use Panasonic's compatible software when WV-ASM200 is unavailable.
  2. Copy the original N3R file to a working folder and keep it unchanged. If the footage may be evidence, preserve the original file, recorder details, export date, and any player or password required to verify it.
  3. Open the recording in the Panasonic application using its archive, playback, or file-open function. Provide the required password or authentication information if the recorder created a protected export.
  4. Select the camera channel and the required start and end times. Export only the necessary interval unless the complete recording is required.
  5. Choose the software's export command and select MP4 if AVI is not offered. WV-ASM200 commonly serves as the first conversion stage rather than as a direct N3R-to-AVI converter.
  6. Open the resulting MP4 in the target application to verify the image, audio if present, time range, and timestamp overlay.

Panasonic menu names and available output formats vary by release. If the installed program offers direct AVI export, use it; otherwise, do not force an AVI extension onto the MP4. A direct export may preserve more recorder information than a second conversion, but it still may not retain every N3R-specific feature.

Convert the MP4 to AVI

FFmpeg is the most controllable desktop option for the second stage. This command creates an AVI using MPEG-4 Part 2 video and uncompressed PCM audio:

ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -c:v mpeg4 -q:v 3 -c:a pcm_s16le output.avi

PCM audio is broadly readable but can make the AVI large. For a smaller file, use MP3 audio if the receiving program supports it:

ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -c:v mpeg4 -q:v 3 -c:a libmp3lame -q:a 2 output.avi

Choose a lower video quality value only when the receiving application supports the resulting codec; transcoding cannot restore detail already lost by the recorder or the first export. AVI files using H.264 may be smaller, but MPEG-4 Part 2 is often safer for older software.

GUI alternatives include VLC's Media → Convert/Save function and desktop converters that accept MP4 and explicitly offer AVI output. Confirm the selected video and audio codecs instead of relying only on the AVI container choice.

Online converters and compatibility limits

General online services normally do not decode Panasonic N3R, so upload the Panasonic-exported MP4 rather than the original N3R. Services such as CloudConvert, Convertio, and Zamzar may provide MP4-to-AVI conversion, but surveillance footage should not be uploaded unless the privacy, retention, and legal requirements permit it.

Online conversion can also remove timestamps, audio, or other metadata, and upload limits may reject large recordings. For confidential footage or evidence, perform both stages locally with Panasonic software and FFmpeg, then open the AVI in the receiving application and check its complete duration, audio, overlays, and synchronization.
