Convert TVS to MP4

Phones, browsers, video editors, and sharing services generally do not accept TeamViewer’s .tvs recordings. Converting the recording to MP4 produces a standard video file that can be played, edited, archived, or uploaded.

What the TVS format is

TVS is TeamViewer’s proprietary recording format for remote-support and remote-access sessions. It is created by TeamViewer’s session-recording feature and may contain the remote screen, cursor activity, audio, and recording timing information, depending on the recording settings.

TVS is not a conventional video container that general-purpose applications can reliably decode. VLC, HandBrake, and FFmpeg normally cannot open the original file directly; TeamViewer must first interpret and render it. Confirm that the file came from TeamViewer, because the .tvs extension can theoretically be assigned by unrelated software.

What the MP4 format is

MP4 is a multimedia container, not a single codec. H.264 video with AAC audio is the most broadly compatible combination for phones, browsers, televisions, media players, editing software, and video-sharing services.

MP4 contains the rendered screen recording as ordinary video and audio. It does not retain TeamViewer playback controls, session navigation, or other proprietary recording behavior.

How to convert a TVS file

Method 1: Export it with TeamViewer, then use HandBrake

1. Install a TeamViewer desktop version that can play the recording. Compatibility and menu names vary between releases, so use the same or a compatible version when possible.
2. Open TeamViewer and choose Extras → Play recorded session, or open the equivalent recorded-session playback command.
3. Select the .tvs file. In the playback window, choose Convert, Convert recorded session, or Save as AVI, depending on the release.
4. Save the exported file, for example as session.avi. The export is the required intermediate step; TeamViewer commonly provides AVI rather than direct MP4 output.
5. Open session.avi in HandBrake. Select the General → Fast 1080p30 preset only if its resolution and 30-fps limit match the source. Otherwise, preserve the source dimensions and frame rate manually.
6. Set the container to Format → MP4, use H.264 for video and AAC for audio, then select Start Encode. Enable a constant frame rate when the destination editor or device requires predictable timing.

If TeamViewer does not show a conversion command, the installed release may not support exporting that recording. Try the TeamViewer version that created the file or a compatible desktop release; renaming .tvs to .avi or .mp4 will not convert it.

Method 2: Encode the TeamViewer export with FFmpeg

After TeamViewer has produced an AVI or another standard video file, FFmpeg can create a widely compatible MP4:

ffmpeg -i session.avi -c:v libx264 -preset medium -crf 20 -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:a aac -b:a 160k -movflags +faststart session.mp4

-crf 18 gives higher quality and a larger file; -crf 23 gives stronger compression. For recordings containing small interface text, values around 18 to 20 are a reasonable starting point. If the export has no audio stream, omit -c:a aac -b:a 160k. Use -movflags +faststart when the MP4 will be progressively played from a web server.

Online conversion after export

Most online conversion services do not decode TVS files, so upload the TeamViewer-exported AVI rather than the original recording. Services such as CloudConvert and Zamzar can convert AVI to MP4; select H.264 video and AAC audio if those options are available, then download and verify the result.

Do not upload a remote-support recording containing passwords, customer information, private documents, or internal systems unless your organization explicitly permits the transfer. Local HandBrake or FFmpeg processing avoids sending the recording to a third party.

Quality and compatibility limits

The TeamViewer export and the later MP4 encode cannot restore detail that was missing from the TVS recording. Screen recordings often contain sharp text during changes and long static periods; resizing or aggressive compression can make interface text unreadable.

Keep the original .tvs file and the TeamViewer-exported file for archival use. Preserve the source resolution and frame rate unless a specific device requires conversion. Avoid repeated lossy exports, because each encode can soften text and introduce compression artifacts.

Play the finished MP4 from beginning to end and check image quality, audio synchronization, missing audio, static sections, and the final file on the intended device or editor. MP4 compatibility is highest with H.264, AAC, and 8-bit 4:2:0 video; editors that require editing-friendly media may still prefer a different intermediate format.
