A video from an older phone or messaging system may be saved as 3GP even though a current editor, player, or sharing platform expects MP4. Converting it provides a more compatible copy for playback and editing while retaining the original file for reference.

What 3GP is

3GP is a multimedia container defined for 3GPP mobile networks and used extensively by older phones from Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Samsung, and early Android manufacturers. These devices used it for camera recordings, video messages, and short clips because it supported small files on limited storage and slow mobile connections.

3GP is a container, not a single video codec. Depending on the device, it can hold MPEG-4 Part 2, H.263, H.264, or other video streams, together with AMR-NB, AMR-WB, AAC, or another audio stream. The filename usually ends in .3gp; .3g2 is a related format used by some CDMA phones.

Modern software supports 3GP less consistently, particularly when the file contains legacy H.263 video or AMR audio. A file extension change alone does not convert the streams or solve those compatibility problems.

What MP4 is

MP4 is a widely supported multimedia container based on the ISO Base Media File Format. For general compatibility, MP4 files commonly contain H.264 video and AAC audio. Current phones, computers, televisions, browsers, editors, and sharing platforms generally handle this combination more reliably than older 3GP combinations.

Conversion may only repackage compatible streams, or it may decode and re-encode the video and audio. It cannot restore detail lost through the original phone's resolution, frame rate, lighting, or compression, and it cannot add audio to a recording that has no audio stream.

Convert locally with FFmpeg

FFmpeg runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux. This command re-encodes the file to H.264 video and AAC audio, a practical choice for broad MP4 compatibility:

ffmpeg -i input.3gp -c:v libx264 -pix_fmt yuv420p -crf 23 -preset medium -c:a aac -b:a 128k -movflags +faststart output.mp4

Replace input.3gp with the actual source filename and choose an output filename that does not overwrite it. The -crf value controls visual quality and size: values near 18 retain more quality and create larger files, while values near 26 create smaller files with more compression. The selected preset changes encoding speed and file efficiency, not the source detail.

If the source streams are already compatible with the intended MP4 player, this faster command can copy them without re-encoding:

ffmpeg -i input.3gp -c copy output.mp4

Stream copying does not reduce quality, but it can leave H.263, AMR, or another stream that the target player does not support. Use the re-encoding command when compatibility matters more than speed or exact stream preservation.

Quality and compatibility limits

H.264 video with AAC audio and yuv420p pixel format is usually safer for older hardware and software than H.265/HEVC, although H.265 can produce smaller files at similar visual quality on supported devices.
Old recordings may use low resolution, low frame rate, mono AMR audio, variable timing, or unusual codec parameters. MP4 conversion does not improve any of those source characteristics.
Some phones store portrait orientation as rotation metadata instead of rotating the encoded frames. FFmpeg normally applies recognized rotation metadata when transcoding, but stream copying may preserve the metadata without changing the pixels; verify the result on the intended device.
A file with missing, damaged, or unsupported streams may produce an incomplete output or fail to convert. Renaming .3gp to .mp4 does not repair it.
Keep the original 3GP until the converted file has been tested for playback, orientation, duration, audio, and lip synchronization.
