Convert HKV to MP4

Convert proprietary surveillance HKV footage with vendor software, then export or encode it as MP4.

How to convert hkv to mp4 file

  • Video

Surveillance software and recorders may save footage as HKV, while phones, browsers, editors, and standard media players usually expect MP4. Converting a readable export makes the recording easier to share and edit, but the original HKV should be preserved for evidence or later verification.

What the HKV format is

HKV is not one universal video standard. The extension is associated with proprietary surveillance products, including Eyesight IP camera systems distributed with EazzyDV Electric's monitoring software, and may also appear in some Hikvision-related workflows. The exact encoding, metadata, encryption, and conversion method depend on the recorder or camera software that created the file.

Identify the source system before choosing a converter. An HKV file from an Eyesight system normally requires SYSM Monitor; a file exported by a Hikvision recorder may require the corresponding Hikvision player or a fresh export from the recorder. Renaming .hkv to .mp4 does not convert the video, and generic players such as VLC or FFmpeg may not decode proprietary or encrypted variants.

What the MP4 format is

MP4 is a container supported by Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, browsers, smart TVs, and most editing applications. For broad compatibility, use H.264 video with AAC audio. H.265 can reduce file size at similar visual quality, but older devices and editors may not support it.

How to convert the file

Use SYSM Monitor for Eyesight files

  1. Install and open the SYSM Monitor software supplied with the Eyesight or EazzyDV system. Use the vendor's installer or the original system documentation; unrelated download sites may provide incorrect software.
  2. Open the playback or file-export screen and import the HKV recording. Select the camera and required time range if the software accesses recordings through its database rather than directly from the file.
  3. Use the program's export or backup command and select AVI if MP4 is not offered. Choose an output folder and complete the export.
  4. Open the AVI in HandBrake, VLC, or FFmpeg and encode it as MP4. In HandBrake, choose Open Source, select the AVI, choose the Fast 1080p30 or a comparable H.264 preset, select an output filename ending in .mp4, and start the encode.

If SYSM Monitor offers a native MP4 export, use it instead of creating an AVI intermediate. Menu names and available formats vary between releases.

Use the recorder or Hikvision software

For a Hikvision-origin file, first try the Hikvision player supplied for that recorder, such as VSPlayer when it supports the specific export. Add the file, verify that it plays, then use Convert, Export, or the equivalent command and choose MP4 if available. Do not assume that every file with an HKV extension is compatible with every Hikvision utility.

A recorder that supports direct MP4 export is preferable: connect a USB drive, open its playback or backup screen, select the camera and time range, and choose MP4 under Playback → Export, Backup, or a similarly named menu. Firmware menus differ. Direct export avoids an unnecessary re-encode and may preserve timestamps and audio more reliably.

Convert a readable intermediate file

Use FFmpeg only after the vendor software has produced a file that FFmpeg can read. This command converts an AVI or other standard input to broadly compatible MP4:

ffmpeg -i input.avi -c:v libx264 -c:a aac -movflags +faststart output.mp4

The command re-encodes the video; it does not decrypt HKV, add proprietary HKV support, or recover a damaged recording. HandBrake provides the same type of conversion through a graphical interface.

Online conversion and privacy

Online services such as CloudConvert or Zamzar can convert the AVI intermediate to MP4, but they are not a dependable solution for proprietary HKV files. Upload only a standard file that the service explicitly accepts, and avoid online processing when footage contains faces, homes, addresses, camera layouts, access points, or other sensitive information. Desktop HandBrake or FFmpeg keeps the recording local.

Quality and evidence limitations

Check the resulting MP4 for the complete duration, correct camera view, audio, image quality, and visible timestamp before deleting any source. Re-encoding can reduce quality; exporting may also remove proprietary metadata, authentication data, watermarks, or verification information. An AVI intermediate can be very large and may itself require another lossy encode.

Keep the untouched HKV, the recorder's native export, and any vendor verification files separately when footage may be used for insurance, legal, or disciplinary purposes. Treat the MP4 as a convenience copy rather than the authoritative original.
