Convert PKG to MP4

A device, editor, browser, or sharing service may require an MP4 instead of a software or game package. A .pkg file is usually not a video, so conversion is possible only after extracting a playable video asset or creating a recording.

What the PKG format is

.pkg is a package extension used by unrelated systems. macOS installer packages contain application files and installation metadata; PlayStation packages contain signed or encrypted game, application, update, or system data. Other software can also use the extension for its own package structure.

These files are produced by packaging tools, not cameras or video editors. A package may include trailers, cutscenes, or other media, but the files can be compressed, fragmented, proprietary, encrypted, or stored without recognizable extensions. Renaming file.pkg to file.mp4 changes only the filename and does not convert the contents.

What the MP4 format is

MP4 is a multimedia container supported by browsers, phones, televisions, video editors, and most sharing services. H.264 video with AAC audio provides broad compatibility, while -movflags +faststart places the MP4 index near the beginning for faster web playback.

MP4 is suitable for a decoded video stream, not for an entire installer, game, or application package. If the package contains no accessible video, there is no direct media conversion to perform.

How to obtain an MP4

Extract an accessible video file

1. Work on a copy of the package. Inspect it with 7-Zip, The Unarchiver, or unar; extraction may fail for encrypted, signed, or proprietary packages.
2. Search the extracted files and any nested directories for media such as .mp4, .mov, .mkv, .m2ts, or .webm. An unfamiliar or extensionless file is usable only if the original application can decode it.
3. Test a candidate in VLC. If it plays, open it in HandBrake and choose Presets → General → Fast 1080p30, then select MP4 in the output settings. HandBrake is suitable for normal, unprotected video files.
4. Alternatively, use FFmpeg. This command creates a broadly compatible MP4 while preserving the source resolution and frame rate:

ffmpeg -i input.mkv -c:v libx264 -preset medium -crf 20 -c:a aac -b:a 192k -movflags +faststart output.mp4

Replace input.mkv with the actual source filename. Lower CRF values produce higher quality and larger files; re-encoding an existing MP4 is unnecessary unless compatibility, size, resolution, or codec requirements have changed.

Record video when extraction is not possible

For an installer or game package, use the supported application or platform and export video through its own function if one exists. If the software can display the video but cannot export it, record the window or display with OBS Studio, QuickTime Player, Xbox Game Bar, or an equivalent platform-supported tool.

In OBS Studio, add a display or window capture source and set Settings → Output → Recording to MKV. After recording, use File → Remux Recordings to create an MP4. MKV is safer during capture because an interrupted MP4 recording can become unreadable. Recording can reduce quality, omit alternate audio or subtitle tracks, and include interface elements.

Online conversion options

General online converters normally do not accept arbitrary .pkg files because PKG is not a standard video format. After extracting a normal video file, a service such as CloudConvert can convert supported source formats to MP4; upload only that media file, not the original installer or game package.

Local HandBrake or FFmpeg processing avoids upload limits and protects private, licensed, or proprietary content. Check the service's supported input codecs before uploading, because an extension alone does not identify a playable video.

Quality and compatibility limits

Many console packages and protected applications are digitally signed or encrypted. Ordinary archive utilities cannot turn them into video, and bypassing encryption or access controls may violate platform terms, copyright law, or other laws.

If the package contains only program resources, metadata, or game data, it may contain no video stream at all. Proprietary codecs may also be decodable only by the software that created them; screen capture is then the practical output method, subject to the software's recording restrictions.

For broad playback, use H.264 video, AAC audio, a constant frame rate matching the source, and the source resolution. Verify the resulting MP4 in VLC and the intended target device before deleting the original media.
