Convert G64 to MP4

A Genetec surveillance export may need MP4 for editing, sharing, or playback outside Security Center. Because .g64 also denotes Commodore 64 disk images, identify the file’s source before choosing a conversion method.

What the G64 format is

A Genetec G64 file is a proprietary surveillance export created by Genetec Security Center. It is normally opened with Genetec Security Desk or Genetec Video Player and may contain video, audio, timestamps, camera information, authentication data, and access controls.

A separate Commodore 64 G64 file is a disk image containing software or games. VICE and other Commodore 64 emulators can open it, but it contains no conventional video stream. A video converter cannot turn that disk image directly into MP4.

What the MP4 format is

MP4 is a media container commonly using H.264 video and AAC audio. Browsers, phones, televisions, media players, and video editors support it widely, making it suitable for sharing and routine editing. MP4 does not preserve every proprietary evidence feature from a Genetec export.

How to convert a Genetec G64 file

1. Install the Genetec Security Center client or Genetec Video Player version compatible with the export. The organization that created the file may need to provide the software, credentials, or permissions.
2. Open the G64 and verify the required camera, time range, video, audio, and timestamp display.
3. Use the installation’s investigation or export command. If MP4 is available, select MP4 with H.264, choose the cameras and time range, retain the source frame rate, and export. Menu names and available formats vary by Security Center version, license, and permissions.
4. If MP4 is not available, use Genetec’s native export to a standard format offered by that installation, such as AVI or ASF. Open that exported file in HandBrake or Shutter Encoder, select H.264 video and AAC audio, keep the source frame rate, and choose a resolution no higher than the source. Start the encode and check the resulting file.
5. If the player permits playback but provides no usable video export, capture the playback window with OBS Studio. Add a Window Capture source, set the canvas and output resolution to the source resolution, and select H.264 video with AAC audio. Record to mkv first, then use File → Remux Recordings to create an MP4; direct MP4 recording can become unusable if recording is interrupted.

How to convert a Commodore 64 G64 file

1. Open the disk image in VICE and configure the emulator’s display, scaling, and audio.
2. Run the game or program and capture the emulator window with OBS Studio. A disk image must be played and recorded; it cannot be transcoded as video.
3. Record at the emulator’s intended frame rate, crop emulator borders if required, and save or remux the recording as MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio.

Online converters and compatibility limits

CloudConvert and Convertio can convert an already-standard AVI, ASF, or other supported video file to MP4, but they generally cannot decode a proprietary Genetec G64 or a Commodore 64 disk image. Upload only a non-sensitive export after confirming that the service lists its exact input format; surveillance footage may contain personal, confidential, or legally protected information.

Renaming .g64 to .mp4 changes only the filename. FFmpeg, VLC, HandBrake, and online services cannot bypass Genetec encryption, authentication, permissions, or a proprietary stream that the Genetec software has not exported.

Native Genetec export is preferable for legal or investigative use. Screen recording can lose original metadata, authentication, alternate camera streams, audio, timestamp precision, and frames skipped during playback. Preserve the original G64 and any native export, and treat an OBS recording as a presentation copy rather than the evidentiary master.
