Convert PPSX to MP4

Phones, websites, video editors, and media players often cannot use a PowerPoint slideshow file directly, so a presentation may need conversion for playback or sharing. Exporting it as MP4 renders the slides, animations, narration, and timings into a broadly supported video.

What the PPSX format is

PPSX is Microsoft PowerPoint's Open XML Slide Show format. PowerPoint creates it when a presentation is saved as a show; opening the file normally starts the slideshow rather than the editing interface. A PPSX file can contain slide layouts, text, images, charts, animations, transitions, audio, video, hyperlinks, and recorded narration.

Microsoft PowerPoint for Windows and macOS provides the most compatible way to open and render PPSX files. LibreOffice Impress can open many PPSX presentations, but its handling of PowerPoint animations, transitions, narration, and video export may differ.

What the MP4 format is

MP4 is a multimedia container commonly used for H.264 video and AAC audio. Phones, browsers, smart TVs, video editors, learning platforms, and social networks support it widely. An MP4 plays without PowerPoint and is practical for uploading, embedding, sharing, and archiving.

Conversion renders the presentation into video frames. The result does not retain editable slide objects, hyperlinks, presenter notes, presenter controls, buttons, or other interactive slideshow features.

How to convert PPSX to MP4

Microsoft PowerPoint on Windows or macOS

1. Open the .ppsx file in PowerPoint. If it starts the slideshow, press Esc, then use File → Open to inspect or edit it.
2. Check recorded narration and timings. Use Slide Show → Rehearse Timings to set durations, or Slide Show → Record Slide Show to create or review narration and timings. For an untimed presentation, choose a duration for each slide during export.
3. On Windows, select File → Export → Create a Video or File → Export → Create Video, depending on the PowerPoint version. On macOS, select File → Export and choose MPEG-4 Video as the file format.
4. Choose Full HD (1080p) for most sharing and playback. Choose 4K only when the source artwork and display require it; the larger output increases rendering time and file size.
5. Select Use Recorded Timings and Narrations if the presentation contains timings or narration. Otherwise select Don't Use Recorded Timings and Narrations and set the seconds per slide.
6. Choose MPEG-4 Video if it was not already selected, specify a filename such as presentation.mp4, and select Save or Export. Rendering can take several minutes for long presentations or presentations containing video.

Online conversion services

Services such as CloudConvert, Convertio, and Zamzar may offer PPSX-to-MP4 conversion, but supported formats, limits, and rendering behavior can change. Before uploading, confirm that the service currently lists PPSX as the input and MP4 as the output; some services support PPTX but not PPSX.

Upload the file, select MP4, start the conversion, and download the result when processing finishes. Online conversion is suitable for a nonconfidential one-off file when PowerPoint is unavailable. The upload sends the entire presentation, including embedded media and possibly confidential information, to a third party, and browser-based services may omit complex animations, fonts, narration, or embedded video.

Quality and compatibility limits

• Video export preserves the visual result rather than the presentation structure. Text, shapes, charts, animations, transitions, and links are no longer independently editable.
• Use desktop PowerPoint for presentations with custom timings, narration, transitions, animations, or embedded video. Play the exported MP4 from start to finish and check slide durations, audio synchronization, automatic media, and transition effects.
• Install the fonts used by the presentation before exporting. Missing fonts can change line breaks, text size, and object positioning; replace unavailable fonts in PowerPoint and inspect the affected slides.
• PowerPoint's 1080p output is generally adequate for playback and sharing. 4K raises resolution and file size but cannot improve low-resolution images or video.
• Linked audio or video must be available on the computer performing the export. An unavailable linked file can produce a silent or blank section in the MP4.
• Some PowerPoint effects, fonts, codecs, and embedded media behave differently across PowerPoint versions and operating systems. Review the MP4 on the device or platform where it will be used.
