Convert PSH to MP4

A PSH slideshow must be rendered when a phone, video editor, browser, or sharing service cannot open the original ProShow project. MP4 combines the slideshow’s visuals and audio into one widely supported file.

What the PSH format is

.psh is most commonly a project file created by Photodex ProShow Gold or ProShow Producer. It stores slide order, transitions, captions, timing, music, and references to photographs or video clips; it is generally not a self-contained video.

Photographers, event producers, schools, and other Windows users used PSH files for photo presentations. Photodex discontinued ProShow, so opening an old project may require its original Windows installation, activation, compatible settings, or a Windows virtual machine. Keep the project’s source photos, videos, music, and fonts available because moving or renaming them can create missing-media errors.

What the MP4 format is

MP4 is a multimedia container commonly carrying H.264 video and AAC audio. Phones, browsers, televisions, media players, video editors, and services such as YouTube generally support this combination without ProShow.

Rendering the project to MP4 combines its transitions, captions, effects, images, and audio into a playable video. The result is easier to share and archive than a project that depends on legacy software and separate source files.

How to convert the project with Photopia

Photopia, a Windows slideshow application from the former Photodex team, can import many ProShow projects and export video, including MP4. Compatibility varies by ProShow version and by the effects, fonts, and media used.

1. Install a current Photopia edition on Windows and use its project-import or open command to select the .psh file.
2. Relink missing photographs, video clips, audio, and fonts when prompted. Do not delete the original ProShow project or its asset folders.
3. Preview the entire show and correct missing media, timing, text, and transitions. Imported effects may not match the original exactly.
4. Open Photopia’s video publishing or export function, choose MP4, and select H.264 video with AAC audio if codec options are available.
5. Use the project’s original aspect ratio and a frame size appropriate to the source. For a 16:9 project, 1920×1080 is suitable when the photographs support that resolution; enlarging small images does not add detail.
6. Choose a quality or bitrate setting appropriate to the file-size limit, render the video, and test the resulting .mp4 in VLC or another independent player.

How to export with ProShow

If the project opens in ProShow Gold or ProShow Producer, use the original application when possible because it usually preserves the project’s effects and timing most accurately. The command is commonly under Publish, followed by an option such as Video File or Create Video; wording differs between releases.

Select an MPEG-4 or MP4 preset, retain the original aspect ratio, and choose H.264/AAC when the program exposes codec settings. Review the rendered file before removing the legacy installation or source media. Obtain discontinued software only from a legitimate archive or existing licensed installation.

When an intermediate video is necessary

If ProShow or Photopia cannot create MP4, first render the slideshow to a supported high-quality video such as AVI or MOV, then encode that file with FFmpeg or HandBrake. Neither program normally reads a ProShow PSH project directly.

Example FFmpeg command:

For HandBrake, open the rendered video, choose an MP4-compatible preset such as Fast 1080p30 when its frame rate and resolution suit the project, verify the dimensions and frame rate, and select Start Encode. Avoid converting through multiple intermediate formats because each lossy encode can reduce image quality.

Online conversion and compatibility limits

Services such as CloudConvert and Convertio can convert an already-rendered AVI, MOV, or other supported video to MP4, but they generally cannot interpret a ProShow PSH project. Uploading a rendered slideshow sends its images, audio, and video to a third party, so use a desktop workflow for private material.

Conversion can omit or alter content when linked assets, fonts, music, video clips, or ProShow-specific effects are unavailable. The MP4 cannot contain more detail than the source images and video. For the best result, render directly from the original project once, preserve the PSH file with all referenced assets, and use the resulting MP4 for distribution.
