How to convert pmf to mp4 file

  • Video

Modern phones, browsers, editors, and media players generally do not support PSP movie files directly, so converting them creates a shareable and editable video. MP4 also avoids the PSP-specific audio compatibility problems found in many PMF files.

What the PMF format is

In the PSP context, PMF means PlayStation Movie Format. Sony authoring tools and game developers used it for UMD video, prerecorded game cutscenes, and other PSP video assets. PMF files may also be extracted from PSP game data or UMD images.

PMF is a PSP-specific format rather than a consistently supported desktop container. Its video is commonly MPEG-4-family or AVC-based, while its audio may use ATRAC3 or ATRAC3plus. The .pmf extension is also used by unrelated software, so identify the file before choosing a converter.

What the MP4 format is

MP4 is a multimedia container supported by current phones, computers, browsers, televisions, media players, and video editors. H.264 video with AAC audio inside an MP4 file provides the broadest compatibility for ordinary playback and sharing.

Conversion normally requires re-encoding the audio to AAC because PSP-specific ATRAC audio is not accepted by many MP4 players. The video can sometimes be copied without re-encoding, but only when its codec, profile, resolution, and frame rate are compatible with the intended player.

Check the file before converting

  1. Make a working copy and keep the original PMF unchanged, especially if it came from a PSP game or UMD image.
  2. Inspect the file with MediaInfo or FFprobe. A valid standalone movie should expose identifiable video and, usually, audio streams. If the tool identifies another PMF format, use the application associated with that format.
  3. Try opening the file in VLC. Playback shows that the installed VLC libraries can recognize it, but it does not guarantee that VLC can export it correctly.

Convert with FFmpeg

FFmpeg is the most controllable desktop option, provided the installed build supports the particular PMF variant. Run this command in the folder containing the source file:

ffmpeg -i input.pmf -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a? -c:v libx264 -crf 18 -preset medium -c:a aac -b:a 160k -movflags +faststart output.mp4

Replace input.pmf with the actual filename. This command re-encodes the video as H.264 and the audio as AAC, producing a broadly compatible MP4. Lower CRF values increase quality and file size; values around 18–23 are typical for H.264, depending on the source and desired size.

If the PMF contains compatible H.264 or MPEG-4 video, try copying the video stream while converting only the audio:

ffmpeg -i input.pmf -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a? -c:v copy -c:a aac -b:a 160k -movflags +faststart output.mp4

Stream copying avoids additional video loss and is faster, but it fails when FFmpeg cannot place the source codec in a compatible MP4 file. Use the first command when the copied result will not play or when maximum device compatibility matters. If FFmpeg says it cannot determine the input format, the PMF variant may be unsupported; changing the extension to .mp4 does not convert the file.

Use a graphical converter

Shutter Encoder is a desktop interface for FFmpeg. Add the PMF file, choose an H.264 conversion function, select MP4 as the output container when offered, and enable AAC audio. Use a rewrap or stream-copy function only if the source is recognized and the output plays correctly; re-encoding is safer for PSP-specific audio.

VLC can also convert a PMF that it opens:

  1. Select Media → Convert/Save.
  2. Add the PMF file and select Convert/Save.
  3. Choose an MP4 profile using H.264 video and AAC audio.
  4. Set a destination filename ending in .mp4, then start the conversion.

VLC exposes fewer diagnostics than FFmpeg. If it produces a silent, incomplete, or unplayable file, inspect the streams with FFprobe and use FFmpeg instead.

Online conversion and limitations

CloudConvert, Convertio, and Zamzar are established online conversion services, but PMF support is inconsistent and can change. Upload only when the service explicitly accepts the file and identifies it as a playable video; do not rely on an output produced after merely accepting the .pmf extension. Local FFmpeg conversion is preferable for private footage, large files, PSP data, and copyrighted UMD or game content.

Some PMF files are not standalone movies: they may be encrypted, indexed through game-specific data, or packaged in a way that general converters cannot decode. FFmpeg, VLC, HandBrake, and web converters cannot normally recover those assets. Extract the movie first with a tool designed for the specific game, UMD image, or PSP data format, then convert the resulting playable stream. Copyright and distribution restrictions may apply to extracted commercial game or UMD video.
