Convert G64X to MP4

A Genetec surveillance export may need conversion when recipients must play, edit, upload, or archive the footage without Genetec software. MP4 provides broader compatibility than the original G64X file, but the original should remain available for evidence and metadata purposes.

What the G64X format is

G64X is a proprietary Genetec video-export format used with Genetec Security Center, especially Security Desk and Genetec Video Player. A file can include surveillance video, audio, timestamps, camera details, overlays, and Genetec-specific metadata or protection.

G64X is not a standard container such as MP4, and renaming .g64x to .mp4 does not convert it. Playback and export normally require an authorized Genetec application; available functions depend on the Genetec release, file type, and operator permissions.

What the MP4 format is

MP4 is a standard multimedia container supported by Windows, macOS, mobile devices, browsers, video editors, and most sharing platforms. H.264 video with AAC audio inside an MP4 file offers broad compatibility and usually produces smaller files than surveillance-specific or intermediate exports.

MP4 is a viewing, editing, and distribution copy rather than a complete replacement for G64X. Converting can remove Genetec metadata, authentication, access controls, digital signatures, overlays, or other forensic information, and re-encoding can reduce image quality.

How to convert G64X to MP4

Export the G64X file with Genetec software

1. Use Genetec Security Desk or the authorized Genetec Video Player on a supported Windows computer. Obtain the software from your Genetec administrator or organization rather than an unverified download site.
2. Open the .g64x file using the application's open command, then confirm that the video, audio, timestamps, camera identity, and required overlays appear correctly.
3. Use the application's export or save function. Depending on the version and permissions, Genetec may offer AVI, ASF, WMV, or another standard output; menu names and available formats vary, so use the format provided by that installation.
4. Save the standard-format export to a working folder and keep the original G64X file unchanged.

Some Genetec installations can export directly to a standard video format, but an MP4 option is not guaranteed. If the application offers MP4, select it and verify the resulting file in a normal media player; otherwise, encode the standard intermediate file as described below.

Encode the intermediate file as MP4

HandBrake can convert an AVI, ASF, WMV, or other readable intermediate file locally. Open the file, choose a preset matching the source resolution and frame rate, set the container to MP4, select H.264 for video and AAC for audio when available, choose a destination ending in .mp4, and select Start Encode. Do not upscale low-resolution surveillance footage.

For repeatable conversion, use FFmpeg:

Lower CRF values preserve more detail but create larger files; values around 20–23 are common starting points. Adjust the input filename and, if necessary, omit the audio options when the export contains no audio.

Stream copying avoids re-encoding only when both source streams and the MP4 container are compatible:

AVI exports often contain codecs or audio formats that MP4 players do not support. If the copied file fails to play or has missing audio, use H.264/AAC re-encoding instead.

Use an online converter only for a non-sensitive intermediate

Services such as CloudConvert or Zamzar may convert a standard AVI, ASF, or WMV export to MP4, but they generally cannot decode G64X directly. Upload only a file that has already been exported by Genetec, and only when organizational policy permits transferring surveillance footage to a third party. Local HandBrake or FFmpeg conversion is preferable for confidential, personal, legal, or investigative video.

Quality and compatibility limits

A G64X export followed by MP4 encoding can change frame timing, remove overlays or metadata, and introduce compression artifacts. Check the MP4 from beginning to end, including audio synchronization, timestamps, camera views, and any details needed for the intended use.

For legal, insurance, or investigative work, retain the original G64X file and document the export date, Genetec application and version, operator, output settings, and any required checksum or chain-of-custody procedure. Use the MP4 as a convenience copy, not as the sole evidentiary original.
