KeepSafe stores private videos in an encrypted .ksd file that ordinary media players cannot open. Exporting the video from KeepSafe, then converting it to MP4 when necessary, makes it usable in standard players, editors, and sharing services.

What the KSD format is

In the video-file context, .ksd identifies an app-specific encrypted file used by KeepSafe, a mobile privacy vault for hiding photos and videos. It is not a standard video container such as MP4, and the file usually cannot be decoded by VLC, HandBrake, FFmpeg, or a general online converter.

KeepSafe users normally open these files through the KeepSafe app with the correct PIN, passcode, or biometric authentication. The encrypted file may contain a video that was originally MP4, but changing .ksd to .mp4 does not decrypt it and can make the file appear corrupted.

What the MP4 format is

MP4 is a widely supported multimedia container used by Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, web browsers, televisions, and video-editing applications. H.264 video with AAC audio offers broad compatibility; H.265/HEVC can produce smaller files but is less consistently supported.

An MP4 export is useful for playback outside KeepSafe, editing, uploading, or archiving a viewable copy. MP4 does not preserve KeepSafe’s vault protection, so store the exported file securely if the video is private.

Export the video from KeepSafe

  1. Install or open the official KeepSafe app on the device that contains the video and authenticate with the required PIN, passcode, or biometric method.
  2. Open the video in the vault and use the available Export, Unhide, Save to device, or Share command. The exact label depends on the app version and operating system.
  3. Choose the device gallery, Files app, or another local destination. Keep the original exported file before attempting another conversion.
  4. Check the exported file’s extension and open it in VLC or the operating system’s media player. If it is already .mp4, no further conversion is needed.

Do not delete the KSD file until the exported video plays correctly and contains the required picture, sound, and duration. If KeepSafe cannot open the vault, a generic converter cannot recover the video; use the account-recovery or support options provided by KeepSafe instead of renaming or modifying the encrypted file.

Convert the exported video on a computer

For a decrypted video that is not already MP4, HandBrake provides a graphical desktop conversion. Open the file, select the Fast 1080p30 or another suitable preset, set the format to MP4, and start the encode. Choose H.264 for compatibility and AAC audio when those options are available.

FFmpeg is suitable for command-line conversion. Inspect the file first:

ffprobe -hide_banner input.ext

For a compatible source, re-encode to H.264/AAC with:

ffmpeg -i input.ext -c:v libx264 -preset medium -crf 20 -c:a aac -b:a 128k -movflags +faststart output.mp4

If the source already contains video and audio codecs supported by MP4, a stream copy avoids quality loss and is faster:

ffmpeg -i input.ext -c copy output.mp4

Stream copying can fail when the source codecs or timestamps are incompatible with MP4. Re-encoding then becomes necessary and may reduce quality. VLC can perform the same task through Media → Convert/Save, but it is best used after KeepSafe has produced a normal, readable media file, not as a KSD decryption tool.

Online conversion and limitations

Services such as CloudConvert or FreeConvert may convert a decrypted, supported video to MP4, but they generally cannot open KeepSafe’s encrypted KSD files. Use an online service only after checking that it accepts the exported source extension and that the video contains no confidential material. Uploading private videos transfers them to a third party and may expose them through retention, account, or processing systems.

Conversion can remove metadata, subtitles, chapters, cover images, or other stream information. Re-encoding can reduce detail, introduce artifacts, or change frame rate and audio synchronization. Keep the untouched KSD file and the original decrypted export as separate originals; treat the MP4 as a compatibility copy.
