Convert LRF to MP4

Identify Sony ebook and League replay LRF files, then create a compatible MP4 video.

Convert LRF files online

We don’t have a dedicated online converter for LRF to MP4 yet, but you can convert LRF files online to these formats:

How to convert lrf to mp4 file

  • Video

A phone, editor, or sharing service may require MP4, while an LRF file may be an old League of Legends replay or a Sony ebook rather than a video. Identify the program that created the file first, because each LRF type requires a different workflow.

What the LRF format is

LRF is not one universal video format. The two significant uses are:

  • Sony Broad Band eBook: an ebook format used by older Sony Reader devices and Sony Reader Library software. It stores text, page layout, images, fonts, and metadata, not video frames or an audio track. Older releases of calibre can read or convert some LRF ebooks.
  • LOLReplay replay: a proprietary recording of League of Legends game data used by the discontinued LOLReplay application. It is replay data, not a conventional video. Current League of Legends replays normally use the .rofl extension, so an .lrf file associated with League is likely an old, version-specific replay.

Check the file's origin before choosing a converter. An LRF from a Sony Reader or ebook archive is an ebook; an LRF created by LOLReplay requires replay software. An unrelated application may use the same extension for another format.

What the MP4 format is

MP4 is a multimedia container commonly used for H.264 or H.265 video and AAC audio. It is supported by phones, browsers, televisions, editors, and most video-sharing services. Converting an ebook to MP4 creates a slideshow or page recording, while converting a game replay creates a rendered gameplay video; neither result preserves the original ebook structure or replay data.

Convert a Sony ebook LRF to MP4

  1. Extract the ebook content. Try an older, trusted calibre release that supports LRF input, add the file, and select Convert books → Output format. Choose PDF or EPUB. The command-line equivalent, when the installed calibre version supports LRF, is ebook-convert input.lrf output.pdf. Current calibre releases may not include the old LRF input plugin.
  2. Render pages for video. PDF is the more predictable source for a page-by-page video. Export its pages as sequential PNG files with a PDF renderer, or capture the ebook in calibre's viewer with OBS Studio. A page capture is necessary because an ebook does not contain a video timeline.
  3. Assemble the video. For files named page-001.png, page-002.png, and so on, run:
    ffmpeg -framerate 1/3 -i page-%03d.png -c:v libx264 -pix_fmt yuv420p -movflags +faststart output.mp4
1/3 displays each page for three seconds. Use a higher or lower frame rate to change the page duration.
  4. Use OBS Studio instead of image assembly when timing matters. Add a window or display capture source, choose the required canvas and output resolution, then select Settings → Output → Recording. Use H.264 video and AAC audio if audio is required. Advance pages manually or with a fixed interval while recording.

Calibre and FFmpeg are desktop options. An online service such as CloudConvert or Zamzar may convert the intermediate PDF or a finished video to MP4, but these services generally do not decode Sony LRF directly. Do not upload private or copyrighted ebooks unless the service and rights permit it.

Convert a LOLReplay LRF to MP4

  1. Test replay compatibility first. Install the original LOLReplay software or a compatible historical replay utility only from a trustworthy source, then open the .lrf file. Replays are tied to particular game versions and may no longer open after League updates.
  2. Export or record the replay. Some historical LOLReplay releases included a LOLReplay File Converter that exported compatible replays to WMV. If that utility works with the file, create the WMV output. If it does not, play the replay in a compatible client and capture the window with OBS Studio; there is no reliable modern converter for every old LOLReplay file.
  3. Convert WMV to MP4. With FFmpeg, run:
    ffmpeg -i replay.wmv -c:v libx264 -c:a aac -pix_fmt yuv420p -movflags +faststart replay.mp4
VLC can also perform the conversion through Media → Convert/Save. CloudConvert and Zamzar are online alternatives for the WMV-to-MP4 step, not for decoding the original replay.

Quality and compatibility limits

An ebook recording contains video images rather than selectable, searchable, or reflowable text. Small text becomes unreadable if the capture resolution is too low; set the recording or page-rendering resolution before exporting because enlarging the MP4 cannot restore missing detail. Add narration or music separately if the output needs an audio track.

A replay export or screen recording may lose interactive camera controls, game metadata, chat data, and replay navigation. The rendered result shows only the viewpoint and overlays that were visible during playback.

For broad playback compatibility, use H.264 video, AAC audio when needed, and yuv420p. DRM-protected Sony ebooks may not open in calibre; do not bypass DRM. Old LOLReplay files may contain executable or malicious content if obtained from an untrusted source, so scan downloads and avoid unsupported converters that require installing unknown software.
