Phones, browsers, and most current video editors cannot use a Roxio project file directly; they need a rendered video such as MP4. Exporting the project also makes its timeline, effects, titles, and audio playable outside Roxio for sharing or archiving.

What the DMSM format is

DMSM is the project format used by Roxio VideoWave in Roxio Creator and some Roxio Easy Media Creator releases. It stores editing instructions such as clip order, trims, transitions, titles, effects, and audio adjustments, plus references to the source media. It is not a conventional video stream, so renaming .dmsm to .mp4 or opening it in VLC, HandBrake, or FFmpeg does not perform a conversion.

The project may reference video, audio, and image files stored elsewhere instead of containing them. Keep those files in their original locations, or use VideoWave's relink or browse function if it reports missing media. A DMSM project cannot be rendered correctly without its referenced assets.

What the MP4 format is

MP4 is a media container commonly used for H.264 or H.265 video with AAC audio. H.264 video with AAC audio provides the broadest compatibility with phones, browsers, televisions, media players, social platforms, and video editors.

MP4 is a rendered delivery file, not an editable replacement for the DMSM project. Export normally re-encodes the video and can reduce quality, so retain the DMSM file and original source media if further editing may be needed.

How to convert DMSM to MP4

  1. Install the Roxio Creator or Roxio Easy Media Creator release that created the project, or a compatible release containing VideoWave. Support for older DMSM projects, codecs, and effects varies between versions.
  2. Place the .dmsm file and all referenced source clips on an accessible local drive. Open the project through File → Open, then relink any missing files when prompted.
  3. Review the complete timeline. Check source clips, transitions, titles, audio levels, frame size, and frame rate before rendering.
  4. Use VideoWave's video output or export command. Its name and location vary by release; common labels include Output → Export Video, Share → Create Video File, or Export.
  5. Select an MP4 or MPEG-4 profile. Choose H.264 video and AAC audio for general playback. Match the source resolution and frame rate where possible; a 1920×1080 project commonly uses roughly 8–12 Mbps for ordinary H.264 delivery, although fast-moving footage may need more.
  6. Set a destination with enough free space and a filename ending in .mp4, then start the render. Play the finished file in at least one target player before removing the project or source media.

VideoWave is the appropriate first-stage converter because it understands the proprietary project structure and renders the edits. General online converters normally do not accept DMSM files: they expect a completed video stream, and an upload cannot reliably resolve media referenced from the project. For privacy, size, and missing-media reasons, export locally rather than uploading the project.

Using an online converter after export

If VideoWave can export only to another finished video format, encode that output to MP4 with desktop HandBrake or FFmpeg. Reputable browser services such as CloudConvert and FreeConvert can convert a supported intermediate video to MP4, but they do not replace VideoWave for opening a DMSM project. Upload only non-confidential footage, and check the service's file-size, retention, and codec limits.

In HandBrake, open the rendered video, choose an H.264 preset such as Fast 1080p30 or an equivalent preset matching the source, confirm AAC audio, and select Start Encode. This adds another encode, so use it only when the direct VideoWave MP4 export is unavailable or incompatible.

Quality and compatibility limits

Export cannot restore detail already lost in the source footage. Avoid lowering the original resolution, frame rate, or bitrate during the first export, and avoid repeatedly re-encoding the MP4. H.265 may produce smaller files at similar quality, but H.264 is safer for older devices and software.

If Roxio cannot open the DMSM file, try the same major Roxio generation used to create it and restore the original source paths. A newer release may omit legacy codecs or effects, while an older release may lack the required MP4 encoder. If the project opens but offers no MP4 output, render to the highest-quality available video format and encode that finished file once with HandBrake.
