How to convert 3gp to mpeg4 file

  • Video

Older phone recordings in 3GP may be rejected by an editor, TV, presentation program, or upload service that requires an .mp4 file. Converting them to an MP4 with compatible video and audio codecs improves playback and import support.

What 3GP files contain

3GP is a multimedia container defined by the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) for 3G mobile phones and cellular video services. Early Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Motorola, Samsung, LG, and other feature phones commonly recorded video as .3gp.

A 3GP file can contain H.263, MPEG-4 Visual (Part 2), or H.264 video, plus AMR-NB, AMR-WB, AAC, or other audio streams. Its small dimensions and low bit rates suited early mobile networks, but older codecs such as H.263 and AMR can prevent import into current software. The similar .3g2 extension identifies the related 3GPP2 format and may require the same treatment.

What MPEG-4 usually means

“MPEG4” is often used to mean an MP4 file, formally the MPEG-4 Part 14 container, with the extension .mp4. MPEG-4 is a standards family, not a single video codec; an MP4 file may hold different video and audio streams.

For the widest compatibility, create an MP4 containing H.264/AVC video and AAC audio. This combination is broadly supported by current operating systems, phones, TVs, web platforms, and editing applications. An MP4 container can sometimes carry the original 3GP streams unchanged, but that does not make unsupported H.263 or AMR streams compatible with every target program.

Convert the file online

  1. Open the 3GP-to-MPEG4 converter on 101convert.com.
  2. Upload the .3gp file and select MPEG4 or MP4 as the output format.
  3. Start conversion, then download the resulting .mp4 file.
  4. Open the downloaded file in the intended player, editor, or upload service before deleting the source recording.

Changing recording.3gp to recording.mp4 only changes its filename; it does not change the container or codecs.

Convert locally with FFmpeg

FFmpeg is useful for batch jobs, damaged legacy files, and explicit codec control. The following command re-encodes video to H.264 and audio to AAC:

ffmpeg -i input.3gp -c:v libx264 -crf 20 -preset medium -c:a aac -b:a 128k -movflags +faststart output.mp4

-crf 20 is a reasonable H.264 starting point. Use a lower value such as 18 for less compression and a larger output file, or a higher value such as 23 for a smaller file with more compression. -movflags +faststart places MP4 indexing data near the beginning of the file, which helps progressive web playback.

If the source streams are already acceptable to the intended target, test a fast remux first:

ffmpeg -i input.3gp -c copy output.mp4

Remuxing copies streams without quality loss, but it can retain incompatible codecs. If the output has no audio, will not import, or fails on the destination device, re-encode it as H.264 and AAC instead.

Use HandBrake when a desktop interface is preferred

Open the 3GP file in HandBrake, select an MP4 output under Summary → Format, choose H.264 (x264) under Video → Video Encoder, and select AAC under Audio → Codec. Set an output filename ending in .mp4 and start encoding. If HandBrake cannot open an older 3GP file or its audio track, use FFmpeg, which provides more direct control over legacy codecs.

Quality and compatibility limits

Container conversion cannot restore detail absent from a low-resolution or heavily compressed recording. Re-encoding a 176×144 or 352×288 3GP video as MP4 can make it usable in modern software, but it cannot create HD detail.

Avoid repeatedly converting the same video: each lossy H.264 encode can add artifacts. Keep the original 3GP file, and verify duration, audio synchronization, image orientation, and playback in the actual destination application. Files with AMR audio or H.263 video usually need AAC and H.264 re-encoding rather than stream copying.
