Convert M3U8 to AVI

Some legacy editors, industrial systems, and older playback devices accept AVI but not HLS streams. Converting the source requires retrieving the media referenced by the M3U8 playlist and encoding it into an AVI container.

What the M3U8 format is

M3U8 is a UTF-8 text playlist used by HTTP Live Streaming (HLS). It contains metadata and references, not necessarily video data. A master playlist can point to multiple quality variants; a media playlist usually points to video segments such as MPEG-2 .ts files or fragmented MP4 files.

Streaming servers, broadcasters, content-delivery networks, Apple HLS systems, and FFmpeg-based applications use M3U8 playlists. The playlist may be a local file or a URL. Its segment references can be relative paths, remote URLs, or protected resources that require cookies, authorization headers, or an active network connection.

What the AVI format is

AVI (Audio Video Interleave) is an older Microsoft container supported by many Windows-era applications, editing systems, laboratory devices, and industrial tools. AVI can hold different codecs; compatibility depends on the particular video and audio codecs inside it.

For broad legacy compatibility, MPEG-4 Part 2 video with MP3 audio or Motion JPEG with PCM audio is usually safer than H.264 with AAC. AVI has weaker support for variable-frame-rate timing, chapters, modern subtitle formats, streaming metadata, and some newer codecs. It is not inherently smaller or higher quality than the source.

How to convert M3U8 to AVI

Using FFmpeg

FFmpeg is the most controllable desktop option. Install it from ffmpeg.org or through your operating system's package manager, then open Command Prompt, PowerShell, or Terminal.

1. Use the complete local playlist with its referenced segments, or copy the full HLS playlist URL. A local M3U8 file without its segment files cannot be converted.
2. Inspect the available streams when the playlist contains several variants:

3. Convert the first video and optional first audio stream to a commonly compatible AVI combination:

ffmpeg -i "stream.m3u8" -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0? -c:v mpeg4 -q:v 3 -c:a libmp3lame -q:a 2 "output.avi"

The optional ? prevents failure when the source has no audio. With this quality scale, a lower -q:v value generally produces better, larger MPEG-4 Part 2 video; test the result because output size depends on the source. For maximum compatibility with older hardware, use Motion JPEG and uncompressed PCM instead:

ffmpeg -i "stream.m3u8" -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0? -c:v mjpeg -q:v 3 -c:a pcm_s16le "output.avi"

Use stream copying only when the existing codecs and timestamps are accepted by the target application:

ffmpeg -i "stream.m3u8" -map 0 -c copy "output.avi"

Copying avoids quality loss but often fails or gives poor compatibility because HLS commonly carries H.264 or H.265 video with AAC audio, and some playlists use fragmented MP4 or timestamps that AVI handles poorly. Re-encoding is normally the safer choice.

For a protected or restricted URL, FFmpeg may need the same HTTP headers used by the authorized player, for example:

ffmpeg -headers "Referer: https://example.com/\r\nUser-Agent: Mozilla/5.0\r\n" -i "https://example.com/stream.m3u8" -c:v mpeg4 -q:v 3 -c:a libmp3lame -q:a 2 "output.avi"

Do not bypass access controls. Ordinary format software cannot decrypt DRM systems such as Widevine or FairPlay.

Using a graphical application

Shutter Encoder provides an FFmpeg-based desktop interface and can be useful when its installed version exposes a compatible AVI output or rewrap option. Choose rewrapping only when the source codecs are already suitable; otherwise select a conversion function and verify the video and audio codec settings before starting. VLC can test some unprotected playlists through Media → Open Network Stream, but its HLS-to-AVI conversion controls are less predictable than FFmpeg.

Using an online converter

CloudConvert and Convertio are reputable services, but M3U8 support varies by service and by playlist. Submit only a publicly accessible, non-confidential playlist URL after confirming that the service accepts M3U8 input and produces AVI output. Online services may fail with live playlists, expiring URLs, login-required streams, custom headers, encrypted content, or playlists whose segments are inaccessible to their servers; uploading a small local M3U8 file alone does not upload the referenced video.

Quality and compatibility limits

• Re-encoding cannot improve the original quality and can introduce additional loss. AVI output may be much larger, especially with Motion JPEG or PCM audio.
• A master playlist can offer several resolutions and bit rates. Inspect the variants with ffprobe and select the required stream when automatic selection is unsuitable.
• For audio drift or an editor that requires constant frame rate, specify the required rate, such as -r 30, before encoding. Forcing the wrong rate can duplicate or drop frames.
• Live playlists have no defined end. Stop FFmpeg with Ctrl+C so it can finalize the AVI; an abrupt termination can leave the file incomplete or unreadable.
• OpenDML AVI supports files larger than 2 GB, but some older programs do not. Check the target application's file-size limit before recording or converting long video.
