Convert SPJ to AVI

A PhotoStage slideshow project must be rendered when a player, editor, or older device requires a standalone .avi video. Exporting also preserves a playable copy for sharing or archiving without requiring the original PhotoStage project and its source files.

What the SPJ format is

For video software, .spj is a PhotoStage Slideshow Producer project file from NCH Software. It stores the slideshow timeline, media placements, transitions, captions, effects, soundtrack settings, and links to the original photos, videos, and audio; it is not a rendered video and cannot normally be opened by a media player.

PhotoStage projects depend on their source media. If a referenced file was moved, renamed, disconnected, or deleted, restore it or relink it in PhotoStage before exporting. A project created by an older release may open more reliably in that release or a compatible newer release than in an unrelated video editor.

What the AVI format is

.avi is a multimedia container that can hold video and audio encoded with different codecs. It remains useful when a legacy Windows application, editing system, or playback device specifically requires AVI.

AVI does not specify one universal compression method. An AVI containing Motion JPEG, MPEG-4, or uncompressed video can have different file sizes and compatibility. Uncompressed AVI is easy for some editing systems to decode but can require hundreds of megabytes per minute; Motion JPEG is usually more compatible with older software but produces larger files than modern delivery formats. AVI also lacks some features commonly associated with newer containers, such as efficient streaming and broad support for modern codecs.

How to export SPJ as AVI in PhotoStage

1. Install PhotoStage from the official NCH Software website, preferably the same release that created the project or a compatible newer release.
2. Open PhotoStage and choose File → Open Project, then select the .spj file.
3. Review the timeline and resolve missing-media warnings. Check transitions, captions, image cropping, soundtrack timing, and audio synchronization before rendering.
4. Choose PhotoStage’s video-export command, usually Export Video or Export Video → Computer. Menu names vary by release.
5. Select AVI as the output format, then choose the output resolution and frame rate. Match the source and project settings where possible; do not increase a low-resolution slideshow merely to create a larger file.
6. Choose an available codec. Use Motion JPEG when the receiving application needs a broadly supported editing AVI. Use uncompressed video only when the receiving workflow explicitly requires it. MPEG-4 in an AVI container may create a smaller file, but some older programs support it poorly.
7. Set the output filename with an .avi extension, select a destination, and start the export. Open the result in VLC or another independent player and check the beginning, end, transitions, and audio before removing the project or source files.

PhotoStage is the dependable conversion method because it understands the proprietary timeline and can render its effects, timing, and media references. FFmpeg and general-purpose online converters cannot generally interpret an SPJ project directly.

Converting the rendered video with other tools

If PhotoStage exports a playable video in another format but does not offer the required AVI codec, convert that rendered file with a desktop tool such as FFmpeg or HandBrake. FFmpeg can create a Motion JPEG AVI with PCM audio using:

Replace slideshow.mp4 with the file produced by PhotoStage. A lower -q:v value generally increases Motion JPEG quality and file size. This second conversion cannot recover quality already lost during the first export.

For a non-sensitive rendered video, CloudConvert or Convertio can transcode a standard video file to AVI when their current format options provide the required codec. Upload only the rendered video, not the SPJ project: the service cannot reconstruct PhotoStage’s timeline or find media referenced by local paths. Online conversion also requires uploading the source and downloading the result, which may be unsuitable for private or large projects.

Quality and compatibility limits

Exporting does not restore detail lost in the original images, clips, or audio. Missing source files can produce blank sections, muted audio, export warnings, or an incomplete render. The output duration and frame rate follow the project and export settings, so a slideshow may display repeated or dropped frames if those settings do not match the source material.

Test the AVI on the actual receiving application or device. If it rejects the file, try Motion JPEG with PCM audio, a different resolution or frame rate, or uncompressed video if the workflow requires it. A file named .avi is not automatically compatible merely because its container is AVI.
