ISMV files are commonly produced for Microsoft Smooth Streaming, while older players and editing applications may require video encoded with the Xvid codec. Converting the file to an AVI container with Xvid video and a compatible audio stream makes it usable in software that cannot read fragmented ISMV media.

What the ISMV format is

ISMV is a fragmented MP4 video format associated with Microsoft IIS Smooth Streaming. It stores media in fragments so a streaming server can deliver different bitrate segments according to network conditions. Typical ISMV content uses H.264/AVC video with AAC audio.

You may encounter ISMV files in Smooth Streaming caches, exported broadcast or surveillance workflows, and media packages containing fragmented MP4 segments. The extension identifies a delivery-oriented MP4 variant, not a video codec by itself. FFmpeg can usually read an individual, unencrypted ISMV file directly.

What the Xvid format is

Xvid is an MPEG-4 Part 2 video codec, not a complete container format. Xvid video is commonly stored in an AVI file, usually with MP3 or PCM audio, because many older standalone players and Windows applications support that combination.

Xvid can produce relatively small files at acceptable standard-definition quality and is useful when a legacy player, editor, or playback device explicitly lists Xvid or MPEG-4 ASP support. It is less suitable than H.264 or modern codecs for new archives because it generally requires more storage at comparable quality.

How to actually convert ISMV to Xvid

FFmpeg is the most practical desktop tool because it can demux fragmented MP4 input and encode Xvid output. Install a current FFmpeg build, open a terminal in the folder containing the source file, and inspect the streams first:

For a broadly compatible AVI containing Xvid video and MP3 audio, run:

ffmpeg -i input.ismv -c:v libxvid -q:v 4 -c:a libmp3lame -b:a 128k -ar 48000 -ac 2 -f avi output_xvid.avi

The -q:v value controls Xvid quality in this command; lower values generally produce higher quality and larger files. Values from 3 to 5 are a practical starting range. To limit the video size instead, use a bitrate such as -b:v 1200k rather than -q:v 4.

If the source has no audio, omit the audio options:

ffmpeg -i input.ismv -c:v libxvid -q:v 4 -an output_xvid.avi

To preserve the source frame rate while resizing for an older device, add a scale filter with dimensions divisible by two:

ffmpeg -i input.ismv -vf scale=720:-2 -c:v libxvid -q:v 4 -c:a libmp3lame -b:a 128k output_xvid.avi

On a graphical FFmpeg front end, select the ISMV file, choose AVI as the container, set the video encoder to libxvid or Xvid, select MP3 audio, set the output filename to output_xvid.avi, and start the encode. If the target application requires a file whose name ends in .xvid, verify its documentation first: Xvid normally describes the video stream inside an AVI file, and simply changing the extension does not convert the media.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

AVI has limited support for modern metadata, variable-frame-rate behavior, subtitles, multiple audio tracks, and some high-definition frame sizes. MP3 audio is usually safer than AAC for legacy Xvid hardware, but it is another lossy conversion if the source audio is already compressed.

Encrypted Smooth Streaming content, incomplete cached fragments, or a manifest-dependent package may not decode as a standalone ISMV file. In that case, obtain the authorized unencrypted source or reconstruct the complete stream before encoding; changing the filename or container cannot remove DRM or repair missing fragments.
