What the ISMV format is

ISMV is a fragmented MP4 video format used by Microsoft Smooth Streaming. IIS Media Services and related Microsoft streaming workflows create ISMV media fragments, commonly alongside an .ism server manifest and an .ismc client manifest. The file usually contains H.264 video and AAC audio in an ISO Base Media File Format container. ISMV files are intended for adaptive streaming rather than direct playback in every desktop editor or consumer device.

What the MTS format is

MTS is an MPEG-2 Transport Stream container commonly associated with AVCHD camcorders and Blu-ray-compatible workflows. It can carry H.264 or MPEG-2 video with AC-3, PCM, or other audio streams, depending on the target device. MTS is useful when an editor, media player, television, or disc-authoring application expects transport-stream input. It supports stream-oriented playback and does not require the fragmented MP4 structure used by Smooth Streaming.

How to convert ISMV to MTS

Using FFmpeg

FFmpeg is the most controllable desktop method. It can read fragmented MP4 media and write an MPEG transport stream.

1. Install a current FFmpeg build and place the ISMV file in a working folder.
2. For H.264 video and already compatible audio, run:

ffmpeg -i input.ismv -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0? -c copy -bsf:v h264_mp4toannexb -f mpegts output.mts

The -c copy option remuxes the streams without recompressing them. The H.264 bitstream filter converts MP4-style length-prefixed H.264 data to the Annex B format expected by many MPEG-TS workflows.

If the target device rejects AAC audio, re-encode the audio to AC-3 while copying the video:

ffmpeg -i input.ismv -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0? -c:v copy -bsf:v h264_mp4toannexb -c:a ac3 -b:a 192k -f mpegts output.mts

For a stricter AVCHD-style output, re-encode both streams and set a compatible frame rate and resolution:

ffmpeg -i input.ismv -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0? -c:v libx264 -preset medium -crf 18 -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:a ac3 -b:a 192k -f mpegts output.mts

Replace the input and output filenames as needed. The optional audio map prevents failure when the source has no audio; remove the question mark if an audio track is required.

Using the online converter

Quality and compatibility limits

Remuxing with -c copy does not reduce quality because it copies the encoded audio and video, but it cannot make incompatible codecs compatible. Re-encoding changes the image and may take substantially longer.

Generic MTS playback often accepts H.264 with AAC, while AVCHD hardware and authoring software more commonly expect H.264 video with AC-3 audio, specific frame rates, and supported resolutions. A file with a .mts extension is not automatically a standards-compliant AVCHD recording.

Some ISMV files are encrypted, DRM-protected, incomplete fragments, or dependent on a Smooth Streaming manifest. FFmpeg and ordinary converters may fail on protected content or may not reconstruct a complete presentation from isolated fragments. Check the output with ffprobe output.mts or a media player before deleting the source.
