MXF files from professional cameras and editing systems are often rejected by consumer video players, AVCHD devices, or software that expects an MPEG transport stream. Converting to MTS creates a file suited to those workflows, but usually requires re-encoding the video rather than simply changing the extension.

What the MXF format is

MXF (Material Exchange Format) is a professional container designed for video, audio, metadata, timecode, and multiple tracks. Broadcast cameras, Sony XDCAM systems, Panasonic P2 cameras, and digital cinema equipment commonly record MXF files. Editing and production applications such as Avid Media Composer, Adobe Premiere Pro, and DaVinci Resolve also use MXF for imported, exported, or intermediate media.

MXF can contain different codecs, including MPEG-2, AVC-Intra, DNxHD, DNxHR, and JPEG 2000. The extension alone does not identify the video codec, resolution, frame rate, interlacing, or audio format.

What the MTS format is

MTS is an MPEG transport stream commonly associated with AVCHD camcorders and Blu-ray-compatible video. It normally contains H.264/AVC video with AAC or AC-3 audio and supports HD resolutions, interlaced footage, and standard camera frame rates.

MTS is useful when a consumer media player, AVCHD-oriented editor, television, or camcorder workflow expects transport-stream media. It is a container, not a codec, so changing an MXF filename to .mts does not perform a conversion.

How to actually convert MXF to MTS

For local conversion, FFmpeg is the most flexible option. Install FFmpeg, open a terminal in the folder containing the source file, and run:

ffmpeg -i input.mxf -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0? -c:v libx264 -preset medium -crf 18 -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:a ac3 -b:a 384k -f mpegts output.mts

Replace input.mxf with the actual filename. The command selects the first video and first audio stream, encodes video as H.264, converts audio to AC-3, and writes an MPEG transport stream. Use a higher CRF value such as 21 or 23 for a smaller file; lower values preserve more detail but increase size.

To convert every MXF file in a folder on Linux or macOS, run:

for f in *.mxf; do ffmpeg -i "$f" -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0? -c:v libx264 -preset medium -crf 18 -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:a ac3 -b:a 384k -f mpegts "${f%.mxf}.mts"; done

On Windows, use FFmpeg through PowerShell or a desktop video converter that exposes H.264, MPEG-TS, frame-rate, resolution, and audio settings. For a no-install option, the free converter on 101convert.com can process the file in a web browser.

If the MXF already contains H.264 video and compatible audio, a stream copy may avoid re-encoding:

ffmpeg -i input.mxf -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0? -c copy -f mpegts output.mts

Use stream copying only when the target player accepts those codecs and the resulting transport stream. Many professional MXF files contain codecs that are unsuitable for MTS playback, so the first command is more widely compatible.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

The H.264 conversion is normally lossy. Keep the original MXF as the master, and avoid repeated conversions. Preserve the source resolution and frame rate unless the target device requires a specific format; changing frame rate can cause judder, while converting interlaced footage to progressive video can remove field detail.

Some AVCHD devices require strict profiles, levels, bit rates, GOP structures, and folder layouts rather than any generic .mts file. An MTS file may play correctly on a computer but still fail on a camera or Blu-ray device. Check the device specification before choosing encoding settings.

MXF may contain several video, audio, subtitle, or timecode tracks. The sample command selects only the first video and first audio stream; inspect the source with ffprobe input.mxf and adjust the -map options when additional tracks are required.
