MXF files from professional cameras and broadcast systems are often too large or too specialized for older media players and consumer editing applications. Converting them to DIVX produces an AVI-based MPEG-4 file that is smaller and compatible with software or devices that specifically support DivX video.

What the MXF format is

MXF, or Material Exchange Format, is a professional container designed for exchanging video, audio, timecode, captions, and production metadata. Sony XDCAM and XAVC cameras, Panasonic P2 equipment, Avid systems, Adobe Premiere Pro, and broadcast servers commonly create MXF files.

An MXF file can contain different video codecs, including MPEG-2, AVC-Intra, DNxHD, DNxHR, and XAVC. The .mxf extension therefore does not identify one fixed resolution, frame rate, audio format, or compression method. Camera cards may also contain several MXF files plus metadata and index files; converting only the media file can omit that production structure.

What the DIVX format is

DIVX normally refers to MPEG-4 Part 2 video encoded for DivX-compatible playback, usually stored in an AVI container with an .avi or .divx extension. It is intended for relatively small files and works with many older media players, DVD players, televisions, and applications that support DivX or MPEG-4 ASP.

Compared with typical MXF camera or editing media, DivX reduces storage and playback requirements, but it is a delivery format rather than a preservation or mastering format. Modern devices may support H.264 or H.265 while omitting DivX support.

How to convert MXF to DIVX

Using FFmpeg

FFmpeg is suitable when the MXF contains a codec that FFmpeg can decode and you need control over the video, audio, and stream selection. Put the source file in the working folder and run:

ffmpeg -i input.mxf -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0? -c:v mpeg4 -vtag DIVX -q:v 4 -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:a libmp3lame -b:a 128k output.avi

This selects the first video and first audio stream, encodes MPEG-4 Part 2, writes the DIVX codec tag, converts video to broadly supported 8-bit 4:2:0, and encodes stereo-compatible MP3 audio. The -q:v value controls quality: lower values produce larger files and better quality; values from 3 to 6 are a practical starting range.

To retain every audio stream that FFmpeg can read, replace the mapping options with -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a?. To inspect streams before converting, run ffprobe input.mxf. If your FFmpeg build includes Xvid, -c:v libxvid can replace -c:v mpeg4; keep -vtag DIVX only when the target player accepts that tag.

Using the built-in online converter

You can convert the file for free on 101convert.com without installing software: upload the MXF file, choose DIVX as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting file. For confidential footage or very large camera files, use a local converter instead of uploading the media.

Using a desktop video application

In a desktop converter that exposes codec settings, open the MXF through File → Open, choose AVI or DIVX as the output, select MPEG-4 Part 2 or DivX video, choose MP3 audio, set the output extension to .avi, and start the export. If the application offers only an AVI preset, verify that its video codec is MPEG-4 Part 2 rather than H.264; H.264 in an AVI file is not the same as DivX.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

This conversion is normally lossy because professional MXF footage is re-encoded to MPEG-4 Part 2 and often reduced to 8-bit 4:2:0. Keep the original MXF as the master, particularly when the source uses 10-bit color, an intraframe editing codec, interlaced video, or broadcast timecode.

Interlaced source footage may require deinterlacing for progressive playback; add a filter such as -vf yadif only when the target device cannot display interlaced video correctly. Preserve the source frame rate unless a specific player requires another rate, because changing it can create judder or duplicate frames.

MXF metadata, multiple audio tracks, captions, edit lists, and timecode may not survive an AVI/DivX export. Very old players can also impose resolution, bitrate, audio-channel, or file-size limits. Test the output on the intended device and retain the source if production metadata or broadcast compliance matters.
