What the M2T format is

M2T is an MPEG-2 Transport Stream file, commonly used by HDV camcorders from Sony, Canon, Panasonic, and JVC. It usually contains 1440×1080 interlaced MPEG-2 video with MPEG-1 Layer II audio, although camera settings can vary. You may encounter .m2t files after copying HDV footage from a tape or camera, exporting from older editing software, or capturing video through an HDV device.

The format is designed for transmission and camera recording rather than broad consumer playback. Some modern players handle it directly, but older hardware and applications may require a different container and codec.

What the DIVX format is

DIVX usually refers to an AVI-compatible video file encoded with the DivX implementation of MPEG-4 Part 2. Files commonly use .divx, although some DivX-encoded files use .avi. DivX provides substantially smaller files than MPEG-2 at comparable viewing quality and is supported by many older DVD players, televisions, media players, and Windows applications.

Compatibility depends on the target device. Some devices accept only specific DivX profiles, resolutions, frame rates, audio formats, or file sizes, so a generic MPEG-4 file may not work even when its extension is changed to .divx.

How to actually convert M2T to DIVX

For a free desktop conversion, FFmpeg can read the transport stream, encode MPEG-4 Part 2 video, set the DivX-compatible DX50 codec tag, and store the result in an AVI-style file. Run:

ffmpeg -i input.m2t -c:v mpeg4 -vtag DX50 -q:v 3 -c:a libmp3lame -b:a 192k output.divx

Replace input.m2t with the source filename. The value -q:v 3 uses quality-based encoding; lower values generally produce higher quality and larger files. Use -q:v 4 or -q:v 5 for smaller output.

If the source is interlaced and the destination device handles interlaced DivX, preserve that structure with:

ffmpeg -i input.m2t -c:v mpeg4 -vtag DX50 -flags +ilme+ildct -q:v 3 -c:a libmp3lame -b:a 192k output.divx

For computer playback or devices that require progressive video, deinterlace during conversion instead:

ffmpeg -i input.m2t -vf yadif -c:v mpeg4 -vtag DX50 -q:v 3 -c:a libmp3lame -b:a 192k output.divx

FFmpeg's mpeg4 encoder creates MPEG-4 Part 2 video with the DX50 tag; it does not install the proprietary DivX encoder. If a device specifically requires DivX-certified encoding, use the DivX desktop converter or another application that includes an actual DivX encoder, then choose an AVI or DivX output profile.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

Conversion from M2T to DIVX is a lossy re-encode. Keep the original M2T footage because later conversions cannot restore detail removed by MPEG-4 compression. MPEG-2 HDV footage is often interlaced, so preview the result for comb-like edges; use yadif when the target is a progressive display.

Some DivX-era devices require MP3 audio, AVI-style interleaving, a maximum 720×576 or 720×480 resolution, and specific frame rates. If the device rejects HD output, scale during encoding, for example:

Do not merely rename .m2t to .divx; the MPEG-2 transport stream remains unchanged and will not gain DivX compatibility.
