.3gp file instead of HDV footage stored as .m2t. Converting changes the container and usually recompresses the video to reduce resolution, bitrate, and file size.
What the M2T format is
.m2t usually contains an MPEG-2 Transport Stream recorded by HDV camcorders. HDV cameras from Sony, Canon, and JVC commonly produced M2T files, which video editors could ingest as high-definition MPEG-2 footage. The format preserves camera footage well for editing, but its relatively high bitrate and HDV-specific structure are unsuitable for many older mobile devices.
What the 3GPP format is
.3gp is a 3GPP multimedia container designed for mobile networks and phones. It can contain H.263, MPEG-4 Part 2, or H.264 video with AMR or AAC audio. Compared with typical HDV M2T footage, 3GPP files can use smaller dimensions and lower bitrates, making them easier for older phones, MMS systems, and mobile applications to process.
How to convert M2T to 3GPP
For a direct browser conversion, use the converter on 101convert.com: upload the .m2t file, choose 3GPP or .3gp as the output format, start the conversion, and save the resulting file. This requires no software installation.
For local processing, FFmpeg provides control over codecs and device compatibility:
ffmpeg -i input.m2t -c:v libx264 -profile:v baseline -level 3.0 -pix_fmt yuv420p -vf "scale=640:-2" -r 25 -c:a aac -b:a 96k -f 3gp output.3gp
- Replace
input.m2twith the source filename andoutput.3gpwith the desired output name. - The scale filter limits the output width to 640 pixels while preserving the aspect ratio; use a smaller value such as 320 for older phones.
- Set
-r 29.97instead of-r 25when the source is NTSC-derived and the target device expects that frame rate. - For very old 3GPP devices, try H.263 video and AMR-NB audio if the installed FFmpeg build includes those encoders:
ffmpeg -i input.m2t -c:v h263 -vf "scale=176:144" -r 15 -c:a amr_nb -ar 8000 -ac 1 -b:a 12.2k -f 3gp output.3gp
Quality and compatibility limitations
M2T footage is usually interlaced HDV video, so downscaling it can produce combing artifacts if interlacing is not handled. Add an appropriate deinterlacing filter, such as -vf "yadif,scale=640:-2", when the converted video shows horizontal lines during movement.
The conversion normally involves lossy re-encoding: MPEG-2 video is decoded and encoded again as H.264 or H.263, and the audio may also be re-encoded. Keep the original M2T file for editing or archiving. H.264/AAC gives better quality at a given size on modern devices; H.263/AMR-NB is more compatible with older 3G phones but produces visibly lower quality.
