What the M2T format is
M2T is an MPEG-2 Transport Stream file, typically containing HDV video recorded by tape-based HD camcorders. The video is commonly MPEG-2 at 1440×1080 with interlaced scanning, accompanied by MPEG-1 Layer II audio. HDV capture utilities, camcorder transfer software, and editing applications can create or export .m2t files.
M2T files are designed for sequential transmission and recording, so they may contain transport-stream packets, timestamps, and occasional transmission padding rather than a conventional file-oriented video container. Editors such as Adobe Premiere Pro, Sony Vegas, and FFmpeg can generally read them.
What the TRP format is
TRP is an MPEG transport-stream variant used by some digital video recorders, satellite receivers, cable boxes, and television playback software. A .trp file may contain MPEG-2 or H.264/AVC video with MPEG audio, AC-3, or AAC audio, depending on the recording device.
The extension does not define one universal TRP profile. Some devices accept any valid MPEG-TS stream after the extension changes; others require particular codecs, resolutions, frame rates, packet structures, or proprietary encryption. TRP is useful when the destination device identifies recordings by the .trp extension or expects transport-stream input under that name.
How to convert M2T to TRP
Remux with FFmpeg
For a normal, unencrypted M2T file, remuxing avoids unnecessary quality loss:
- Install FFmpeg and place
input.m2tin an accessible folder. - Inspect the streams with
ffprobe -hide_banner input.m2t. - Run
ffmpeg -i input.m2t -map 0 -c copy -f mpegts output.trp. - Test
output.trpin the intended DVR, receiver, or playback application.
-c copy copies the existing video and audio without re-encoding. The explicit -f mpegts option creates an MPEG transport stream even if FFmpeg cannot determine the format from the .trp extension.
If the destination rejects the original codecs, create a new compatible stream instead:
ffmpeg -i input.m2t -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0? -c:v libx264 -preset medium -crf 20 -c:a aac -b:a 192k -f mpegts output.trp
Use the target device's specifications to select codecs, frame size, frame rate, audio format, and bitrate. Re-encoding takes longer and changes the picture, so it should not be used merely to change the filename.
Use the online converter
You can convert the file on 101convert.com for free without installing software. Upload the M2T file, select TRP as the output format when available, start the conversion, and download the result. Large recordings may be restricted by upload limits, and online conversion may re-encode rather than preserve the original streams.
Quality and compatibility limits
A successful remux preserves the original M2T video and audio quality because no decoded frames are recompressed. Renaming input.m2t to output.trp can work for players that inspect the stream contents, but remuxing is safer because it rebuilds the transport-stream container and timestamps.
TRP recordings from consumer equipment may be encrypted, split into segments, or accompanied by device-specific metadata. FFmpeg can often process the transport stream but cannot remove proprietary encryption. If the target device still refuses a remuxed file, compare its required codecs and stream parameters with ffprobe output and re-encode only the incompatible streams.
