An older video editor or Flash-era publishing system may accept F4V but reject camera-produced M2T footage. Converting requires transcoding the MPEG-2 video and usually its MPEG audio into the H.264/AAC combination commonly used inside F4V.

What the M2T format is

M2T is an MPEG-2 Transport Stream file used mainly by HDV camcorders and HDV capture software. Sony and Canon HDV cameras, HDVSplit, and some video-capture applications create .m2t files when recording or transferring high-definition tape footage.

The container commonly holds MPEG-2 video at 720p or 1080i and MPEG-1 Layer II audio. It is designed for transport and recording, not for maximum compatibility with modern web or editing applications.

What the F4V format is

F4V is Adobe's Flash Video container based on the ISO Base Media File Format. It normally stores H.264 video and AAC audio, with metadata suitable for Flash-era progressive download and streaming workflows.

F4V can reduce file size substantially compared with HDV's MPEG-2 stream at similar visible quality, but Adobe Flash Player and Flash-based browser playback ended in 2020. F4V is therefore mainly useful for legacy systems that specifically require the format; MP4 is usually the better current delivery format.

How to convert M2T to F4V

FFmpeg provides a reliable desktop method and runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux.

  1. Install FFmpeg and place the source file in a working folder. Confirm its streams with ffprobe input.m2t.
  2. Transcode progressive or already deinterlaced footage with:
    ffmpeg -i input.m2t -c:v libx264 -preset medium -crf 20 -c:a aac -b:a 160k -movflags +faststart output.f4v
  3. For interlaced HDV footage, deinterlace during encoding when the destination cannot display interlaced video correctly:
    ffmpeg -i input.m2t -vf yadif -c:v libx264 -preset medium -crf 20 -c:a aac -b:a 160k -movflags +faststart output.f4v
  4. Open output.f4v in the target application and check both audio synchronization and interlacing. Use ffprobe output.f4v to verify that the video codec is H.264 and the audio codec is AAC.

If installing software is not suitable, you can convert the file for free on the 101convert.com website without installing a program. Uploading large or private camera footage may be unsuitable for an online workflow.

Quality and compatibility considerations

The -crf 20 setting is a quality-based H.264 encode; values around 18–23 provide a practical range, with lower values producing larger files. Re-encoding cannot restore detail already lost in the M2T source.

M2T footage is often interlaced, so omitting deinterlacing can leave comb-shaped edges on progressive screens. If the video will be shown on an interlaced system, preserve the source field structure instead of applying yadif.

F4V support is limited in current players and editing software. If the receiving system does not explicitly require F4V, use the same H.264/AAC settings with an .mp4 output instead.
