M2T files commonly come from HDV camcorders, while DAT video files are most often MPEG-1 files stored on Video CDs. Convert the recording when a VCD player, older authoring program, or legacy playback device cannot accept the original HDV transport stream.

What the M2T format is

M2T is an MPEG-2 Transport Stream file, usually containing HDV video from digital camcorders. HDV commonly uses 1440×1080 or 1280×720 interlaced MPEG-2 video with MPEG-1 Layer II audio. Sony, Canon, and JVC HDV cameras and capture applications commonly create .m2t files; video editors may also export them for HDV tape workflows.

What the DAT format is

In the Video category, .dat normally means the MPEG-1 system stream used by a Video CD. These files are usually found in a disc's MPEGAV folder and commonly use the names AVSEQ01.DAT, AVSEQ02.DAT, and so on.

Video CD DAT files use much lower specifications than HDV: PAL generally uses 352×288 pixels at 25 fps, while NTSC uses 352×240 pixels at approximately 29.97 fps. The standard video bitrate is about 1,150 kbps, with MPEG-1 Layer II audio at about 224 kbps. The format is useful for legacy VCD players and authoring software, but it is not a quality-preserving format for HD footage.

How to convert M2T to DAT

FFmpeg is the most direct desktop method because its VCD presets create MPEG-1 program streams with the required video and audio parameters.

  1. Install FFmpeg and verify that the M2T file is readable with ffprobe input.m2t.
  2. Choose the VCD standard that matches the intended player or disc: pal-vcd for PAL or ntsc-vcd for NTSC.
  3. Run the appropriate command:
ffmpeg -i "input.m2t" -target pal-vcd "output.dat"
ffmpeg -i "input.m2t" -target ntsc-vcd "output.dat"

FFmpeg scales the HDV image, converts the video to MPEG-1, converts or resamples the audio as required, and writes an MPEG program stream with a .dat extension. If the source is interlaced and the output will be watched on a progressive display, add a deinterlacing filter:

ffmpeg -i "input.m2t" -vf yadif -target pal-vcd "output.dat"

For a Video CD, the file alone is not the complete disc. VCD authoring software must place it in the correct disc structure, typically under MPEGAV, and create the required navigation and filesystem metadata. Renaming input.m2t to output.dat does not perform conversion.

You can also convert the file free on 101convert.com without installing software. Select the M2T input, choose DAT as the output, upload the file, and download the generated result; confirm that the service offers PAL or NTSC VCD output if the destination is a physical VCD player.

Quality and compatibility limitations

This conversion is strongly lossy: HDV's high-definition MPEG-2 video is reduced to VCD resolution and MPEG-1 compression. Keep the original M2T file for editing or archiving, and use DAT only for the legacy playback target.

PAL and NTSC are not interchangeable in every player. Use PAL for PAL-region equipment and NTSC for NTSC-compatible equipment; selecting the wrong standard can cause incorrect motion, color, or complete playback failure. A DAT file generated as a generic MPEG stream may play in media players but still fail strict VCD authoring checks, so use the VCD preset and a VCD authoring tool when disc compatibility matters.
