What the EVO format is
EVO is an HD DVD video container, commonly found as files such as VTS_01_1.EVO in an HD DVD folder structure. It normally contains MPEG-2 video with AC-3, DTS, or MPEG audio, plus possible subtitles, multiple audio tracks, and navigation-related material. HD DVD authoring tools and disc-copying software create EVO files; they are encountered mainly in backed-up or extracted HD DVD content.
What the DAT format is
In the Video category, DAT usually means the MPEG program-stream file used by a Video CD, often stored in the disc's MPEGAV folder as AVSEQ01.DAT. A VCD-compatible DAT contains MPEG-1 video at approximately 1,150 kbit/s and MPEG-1 Layer II audio at 224 kbit/s, normally sampled at 44.1 kHz. Its low resolution and fixed specification allow compatibility with VCD players, but quality is substantially below the usual 720×480 or 720×576 resolution of EVO video.
How to convert EVO to DAT
Using FFmpeg for a VCD-compatible DAT
FFmpeg is suitable when the destination is a VCD player or software that expects VCD-style MPEG-1 data.
- Install FFmpeg and place the EVO file in an easily accessible folder.
- Check the source streams if necessary with
ffprobe input.evo. Choose the required video and audio streams when the file contains several languages or angles. - For an NTSC VCD, run:
ffmpeg -i input.evo -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0 -target ntsc-vcd output.mpg
For a PAL VCD, use:
ffmpeg -i input.evo -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0 -target pal-vcd output.mpg
FFmpeg's VCD target sets MPEG-1 video, VCD-compatible frame size, bitrate, frame rate, and MPEG audio parameters. After checking that the output plays correctly, rename output.mpg to AVSEQ01.DAT on Windows, or run mv output.mpg AVSEQ01.DAT on Linux and macOS. The extension is a naming convention; the MPEG program-stream data is what determines compatibility.
Creating a DAT-like MPEG stream without VCD restrictions
If the receiving program only requires an MPEG program stream with a DAT extension, rather than a strict VCD file, remux the original streams without re-encoding:
ffmpeg -i input.evo -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0 -c copy -f mpeg output.dat
This is faster and preserves the original quality, but the resulting file remains MPEG-2-based and will not normally work in a standard VCD player. It may also retain audio, resolution, bitrate, or interlacing characteristics unsupported by the receiving application.
Using the online converter
You can convert the file on 101convert.com for free without installing software. Select the video conversion option, upload the EVO file, choose DAT as the output, start the conversion, and download the result. For large EVO files or sensitive disc content, local FFmpeg conversion avoids upload limits and third-party handling.
Quality and compatibility limitations
A VCD conversion requires downscaling from HD DVD resolution and usually changing MPEG-2 video to MPEG-1, so it cannot preserve the original EVO quality. The conversion also re-encodes audio when the source uses AC-3 or DTS. Select the correct NTSC or PAL target; mixing a PAL source with an NTSC VCD target, or the reverse, can cause incorrect frame timing or playback problems.
Subtitles and additional audio tracks are not automatically reproduced by the simple commands above. Use explicit -map options for a chosen audio track, and render subtitles into the video with a video filter if the destination cannot store them separately. A DAT file produced by renaming or remuxing an EVO stream is not necessarily a complete VCD image; disc-level folders, sector layout, and navigation data require VCD-authoring software.
