Phones and older mobile players that accept 3GPP video cannot usually open HD DVD-era EVO files directly. Converting the video changes the container and normally requires re-encoding its HD video and audio into codecs supported by 3GPP devices.

What the EVO format is

EVO is an HD DVD video container used for titles and backups from the HD DVD format. It commonly contains MPEG-2, H.264/AVC, or VC-1 video with Dolby Digital, DTS, or other accompanying audio streams, plus navigation and subtitle data.

You may encounter .evo files after extracting an HD DVD, using an authorized disc-backup application, or receiving an HD DVD-era video archive. Commercial EVO files can be encrypted; conversion software cannot legitimately process protected content unless it has first been decrypted through an authorized method.

What the 3GPP format is

3GPP, normally identified by .3gp, is a multimedia container designed for mobile phones and 3G networks. It commonly carries H.263 or MPEG-4 Part 2 video with AMR audio; many newer players also accept H.264 video and AAC audio in a 3GP container.

3GPP files are smaller and more compatible with older phones than HD DVD video, but they use lower resolutions, lower bit rates, and less advanced audio options. Choose this format when the receiving handset, messaging system, or legacy mobile application specifically requires .3gp.

How to actually convert EVO to 3GPP

For an unencrypted or already decrypted EVO file, FFmpeg provides a direct desktop conversion:

  1. Install a current FFmpeg build and verify that it can read the source:
    ffprobe input.evo
  2. Transcode to a broadly compatible 3GP profile:
    ffmpeg -i input.evo -c:v libx264 -profile:v baseline -level 3.0 -pix_fmt yuv420p -r 25 -vf scale=-2:360 -c:a aac -ar 44100 -ac 2 -b:a 96k -movflags +faststart output.3gp
  3. Test output.3gp on the target device. If it rejects H.264 or AAC, use the older codec combination:
    ffmpeg -i input.evo -c:v mpeg4 -q:v 5 -vf scale=-2:288 -c:a libopencore_amrnb -ar 8000 -ac 1 -b:a 12.2k output.3gp

The second command requires an FFmpeg build with AMR-NB encoding support. If FFmpeg cannot open the EVO stream, use an authorized HD DVD extraction application to create an MKV or another unencrypted intermediate, then replace input.evo with that file in the FFmpeg command.

You can also use the free converter on 101convert.com without installing software: upload the EVO file, select 3GPP or .3gp as the output, start the conversion, and download the result when processing finishes.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

Conversion from HD video to 3GP is lossy. The scale=-2:360 setting preserves aspect ratio while producing a size suitable for many phones; use scale=-2:288 or a lower video bit rate for older handsets and smaller files.

Some 3GP players accept only H.263 with AMR audio, while others accept H.264 and AAC. The target device's manual determines which command is appropriate. EVO chapters, HD DVD menus, interactive features, and some subtitle streams are not preserved by a normal 3GP conversion; the output is generally a single video stream with selected audio.
