Video editors, playback devices, and legacy applications may require Motion JPEG instead of the MPEG-2 transport stream stored in an M2T file. Converting is also useful when frame-by-frame access and broad editing compatibility matter more than the smaller size of the original recording.

What the M2T format is

M2T is an MPEG-2 transport stream file, commonly used by HDV camcorders and their capture software. Sony, Canon, and JVC HDV cameras often recorded 1440×1080 interlaced video in this format, usually with MPEG-1 Layer II audio. You may encounter M2T files after transferring tape-based HDV footage or exporting it from an older nonlinear editor.

M2T is a container rather than a video codec by itself; its video stream is normally MPEG-2. Renaming the extension does not change the encoding, so an MJPG-compatible application requires actual transcoding.

What the MJPG format is

MJPG, or Motion JPEG, stores video as a sequence of independent JPEG-compressed frames. It is commonly delivered in an AVI container with the MJPG video codec, although an .mjpg file can also contain a raw Motion JPEG stream without audio.

Independent frames make MJPG convenient for frame-accurate editing, image extraction, inspection, and older capture or machine-vision software. It usually decodes with low CPU overhead and broad legacy support, but its files are substantially larger than MPEG-2 at comparable dimensions and quality.

How to convert M2T to MJPG

Using FFmpeg

FFmpeg can read the transport stream and encode Motion JPEG. The following command creates an AVI file containing MJPG video and uncompressed PCM audio:

ffmpeg -i input.m2t -c:v mjpeg -q:v 3 -c:a pcm_s16le output.avi

Replace input.m2t with the source filename. In FFmpeg, lower -q:v values produce better MJPEG quality and larger files; values from 2 to 5 are a practical starting range. PCM audio avoids compatibility problems caused by carrying the original MPEG audio into an AVI file.

For an interlaced HDV recording, preserve the fields by omitting video filters. If the receiving program requires progressive frames, deinterlace during encoding:

ffmpeg -i input.m2t -vf yadif -c:v mjpeg -q:v 3 -c:a pcm_s16le output.avi

To create a raw MJPEG stream rather than an AVI container, discard audio and specify the MJPEG muxer:

ffmpeg -i input.m2t -an -c:v mjpeg -q:v 3 -f mjpeg output.mjpg

The raw-stream command is appropriate only when the target application explicitly accepts elementary MJPEG. For general playback and editing, output.avi with an MJPG video stream is usually the more compatible choice.

Using the built-in online converter

You can convert the file on 101convert.com for free without installing software: upload the M2T file, select MJPG as the output, start the conversion, and download the result. Use the AVI/MJPG output when the destination application expects a container, and check the service's output options if it offers both AVI and raw .mjpg.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

  • Transcoding cannot restore detail already lost in MPEG-2 compression. MJPG may look cleaner after editing because each output frame is independent, but it does not recover the source's original information.
  • HDV footage is commonly interlaced. Deinterlacing with yadif improves progressive-display compatibility but changes the fields and may reduce vertical motion detail.
  • Motion JPEG produces large files. Increasing quality, retaining 1440×1080 or 1920×1080 dimensions, and converting long recordings can require substantially more storage than the M2T source.
  • Some applications identify MJPG by the codec tag inside an AVI file, not by the filename extension. Verify the output with a media-information tool if the program rejects a renamed or raw .mjpg file.
