What the DVR-MS format is
DVR-MS is a Microsoft container based on ASF, used mainly by Windows XP Media Center Edition and Windows Vista/7 Windows Media Center to store recorded television. The video is commonly MPEG-2 and the audio may be MPEG-1 Layer II, AC-3, or another stream supported by the recording system. You may encounter .dvr-ms files in old Media Center recording folders or archives copied from Windows PCs.
Some recordings contain Microsoft digital-rights restrictions. A converter can process only files for which the required playback permissions are available; conversion tools should not be used to bypass DRM.
What the MJPG format is
MJPG, or Motion JPEG, stores each video frame as an independent JPEG image. It is commonly delivered in an AVI container as .avi, although other containers can also hold the codec.
Independent frames make MJPG easy for frame-accurate editing, inspection, and import into older hardware or software that does not handle MPEG-2 or DVR-MS. The trade-off is a much larger file than the original compressed recording, with quality controlled mainly by the JPEG quantizer.
How to convert DVR-MS to MJPG
For a local conversion, FFmpeg is the most direct option when the DVR-MS file is readable and not DRM-restricted.
- Install a current FFmpeg build and place the recording in a working folder.
- Open a terminal in that folder and run:
ffmpeg -i "recording.dvr-ms" -c:v mjpeg -q:v 3 -c:a pcm_s16le "recording-mjpg.avi"
The command decodes the source, encodes video as Motion JPEG, converts audio to uncompressed PCM for broad AVI compatibility, and writes recording-mjpg.avi. Lower -q:v values generally produce better JPEG quality and larger files; values around 3–5 are a practical starting range.
To omit audio, use:
ffmpeg -i "recording.dvr-ms" -an -c:v mjpeg -q:v 3 "recording-mjpg.avi"
If FFmpeg identifies the file incorrectly, specify the ASF demuxer explicitly:
ffmpeg -f asf -i "recording.dvr-ms" -c:v mjpeg -q:v 3 -c:a pcm_s16le "recording-mjpg.avi"
You can also use the free converter on 101convert.com without installing software: select DVR-MS as the input format, upload the file, choose MJPG or AVI with Motion JPEG when that option is shown, start the conversion, and download the result. The service cannot convert a file that is damaged, DRM-protected, or otherwise unavailable to its decoder.
Quality, compatibility, and limitations
This is a lossy re-encode: the original MPEG-2 frames are decoded and then compressed as JPEG, so the result cannot contain more detail than the source. Converting to MJPG does not reduce interlacing, remove broadcast noise, or correct an incorrect aspect ratio unless you add processing options.
MJPG AVI files can be several times larger than DVR-MS recordings. For example, a 720×480 or 720×576 stream at moderate JPEG quality may require far more storage than the original MPEG-2 file. Test a short segment before converting a large archive:
ffmpeg -ss 00:10:00 -i "recording.dvr-ms" -t 00:00:30 -c:v mjpeg -q:v 3 -c:a pcm_s16le "test-mjpg.avi"
If the output shows combing on moving subjects, the source is probably interlaced. Deinterlace during conversion with -vf yadif, but expect a change in motion detail and output dimensions:
ffmpeg -i "recording.dvr-ms" -vf yadif -c:v mjpeg -q:v 3 -c:a pcm_s16le "recording-deinterlaced.avi"
Some older AVI applications reject PCM audio with unusual sample rates or channel layouts. If necessary, normalize the audio to stereo 48 kHz with -ar 48000 -ac 2. A conversion error before decoding usually indicates DRM, corruption, or unsupported DVR-MS metadata rather than an MJPG encoding problem.
