DVR-MS recordings often need conversion when a media player or editor cannot open Microsoft’s recorded-TV container, while OGV provides an open Ogg container with Theora video and Vorbis audio. Conversion also makes recordings easier to archive or share, but it requires re-encoding because OGV does not normally carry the original DVR-MS streams unchanged.

What the DVR-MS format is

DVR-MS is Microsoft’s Digital Video Recording format, an ASF-based container used mainly by Windows Media Center to save live television and scheduled recordings. Files commonly contain MPEG-2 video, MPEG-1 Layer II or AC-3 audio, program metadata, and sometimes broadcast captions or multiple audio streams. You usually encounter .dvr-ms files on older Windows Media Center PCs or recordings copied from a Media Center library; WTV later replaced DVR-MS as Microsoft’s primary recording format.

Some recordings are protected by broadcast copy restrictions or DRM. A converter can process only content that the operating system and decoder are allowed to read; changing the container or re-encoding does not remove protection.

What the OGV format is

OGV is an Ogg video file, conventionally containing Theora video and Vorbis audio. It is useful with open-source media players, software that supports the Ogg ecosystem, and workflows that specifically require an open container. Theora/Vorbis encoding avoids patent-licensing dependencies associated with some older proprietary codecs, but OGV is less widely supported than MP4 and WebM on current televisions, phones, browsers, and editing applications.

How to convert DVR-MS to OGV

FFmpeg is the most direct desktop option because it can read many ASF-based DVR-MS files and encode Theora and Vorbis. Use a current FFmpeg build compiled with libtheora and libvorbis.

  1. Put the recording in a working folder and check whether FFmpeg can read it with ffprobe input.dvr-ms.
  2. Convert the first video and audio streams with:
ffmpeg -i input.dvr-ms -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0 -c:v libtheora -q:v 7 -c:a libvorbis -q:a 5 output.ogv

The video quality scale for libtheora generally runs from 0 to 10; higher values preserve more detail and produce larger files. Vorbis quality 5 is a reasonable starting point for television audio. Increase -q:v to 8 or 9 when preservation matters, or lower it to reduce file size.

Many television recordings are interlaced. For progressive playback, add the yadif filter:

ffmpeg -i input.dvr-ms -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0 -vf yadif -c:v libtheora -q:v 7 -c:a libvorbis -q:a 5 output.ogv

Use ffprobe to identify additional audio streams, then select one explicitly with a mapping such as -map 0:a:1. If FFmpeg reports that libtheora or libvorbis is unavailable, install a build that includes those encoders or use a desktop converter that exposes Theora and Vorbis output settings.

You can also use the free converter on 101convert.com without installing software. Upload the DVR-MS file, choose OGV as the output, start the conversion, and download the result; protected recordings or very large files may not be accepted.

Quality and compatibility limitations

This process normally decodes the source and re-encodes both streams, so it is lossy and can take substantially longer than a container-only remux. Keep the original DVR-MS file as the archival source. Captions, Media Center metadata, recording schedules, copy-control flags, and secondary audio tracks may not survive unless the converter explicitly supports them.

Check the output with ffprobe output.ogv and test it in the intended player. If the destination supports modern formats, H.264/AAC in MP4 or VP9/Opus in WebM will usually provide broader playback compatibility and better compression than Theora/Vorbis OGV.
