DVR-MS recordings often need conversion when an older Media Center file must be burned as a DVD-Video disc, opened by DVD authoring software, or played by a standalone DVD player. VOB is the container used inside a DVD-Video structure, so producing a usable result normally requires DVD authoring rather than only changing the filename extension.

What the DVR-MS format is

DVR-MS is a Microsoft container used primarily by Windows XP Media Center Edition and Windows Vista/7 Windows Media Center to store television recordings. It usually contains MPEG-2 video, MPEG-1 Layer II or AC-3 audio, program metadata, and sometimes broadcast-copy-protection information. Files commonly appear in the Media Center Recorded TV folder with names ending in .dvr-ms.

DVR-MS is based on Microsoft’s ASF-derived recording format and is not the same container as an MPEG program stream. Modern players may support the embedded MPEG-2 streams without supporting every DVR-MS metadata or protection feature.

What the VOB format is

VOB, or Video Object, is the MPEG program-stream container used by DVD-Video. A typical disc stores VOB files in the VIDEO_TS folder alongside matching .IFO navigation files and .BUP backups. VOB can contain MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 video, DVD-compatible audio, subtitles, menus, and navigation packets.

VOB is useful for DVD authoring and playback on standalone DVD players, DVD software, and devices that recognize the VIDEO_TS layout. A standalone VOB file is not necessarily a complete DVD: menus, chapters, navigation, and disc metadata require authoring.

How to convert DVR-MS to VOB

For a quick conversion without installing software, use the converter on 101convert.com. Upload the non-protected .dvr-ms file, select VOB as the output format, start the conversion, and save the generated file. Online conversion cannot bypass DRM or recording restrictions; protected Media Center recordings may be rejected or produce unusable output.

For a DVD-compatible result on Windows, macOS, or Linux, use FFmpeg to decode and encode the recording to DVD-compliant MPEG-2, then use DVDStyler or DVDAuthor to create the VOB structure.

  1. Check the recording for copy protection. FFmpeg and authoring software cannot legally or technically remove DRM.
  2. Install FFmpeg and either DVDStyler or DVDAuthor. DVDStyler provides a graphical authoring workflow; DVDAuthor is suitable for command-line processing.
  3. Convert the DVR-MS stream to a DVD-compliant MPEG program stream. Use the television standard that matches the intended disc:

ffmpeg -i input.dvr-ms -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0 -target ntsc-dvd title.mpg

For PAL output, use -target pal-dvd instead of -target ntsc-dvd. These presets encode MPEG-2 video and DVD-compatible audio, select the corresponding frame size and frame rate, and may reduce high-definition recordings to standard-definition DVD resolution.

  1. In DVDStyler, choose File → New, select NTSC or PAL, add title.mpg, create any required menus and chapters, then choose Burn → Burn DVD or generate the DVD folder. The resulting VIDEO_TS directory contains files such as VTS_01_1.VOB.

With DVDAuthor, create a basic title and DVD table of contents:

dvdauthor -o dvd -t title.mpg
dvdauthor -o dvd -T

The authored VOB files will be in dvd/VIDEO_TS. Use a DVD player application to test that folder, or write it to a DVD using software that supports DVD-Video folders.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

Changing .dvr-ms to .vob does not convert the format. DVR-MS video must be decoded and usually re-encoded unless its stream already satisfies DVD-Video limits. Re-encoding can reduce quality, and DVD-Video is limited to standard-definition resolutions: typically 720×480 for NTSC or 720×576 for PAL.

The output television standard should match the source and playback region. NTSC and PAL frame rates, frame sizes, and field order differ; choosing the wrong standard can cause judder, stretching, or incompatibility.

A recording with DRM, missing codecs, damaged ASF metadata, or unsupported audio may fail before authoring. Remove unwanted commercials before encoding when possible, because editing after DVD authoring is less practical. Keep the original DVR-MS file as the archival master; VOB is optimized for DVD-Video compatibility, not compact storage.
