Broadcast cameras and editing systems often store footage in MXF, while some older editors, capture applications, and frame-based workflows require Motion JPEG instead. Converting creates a widely readable MJPEG video, usually in an AVI container, but it re-encodes the video and can increase file size.
What the MXF format is
MXF, or Material Exchange Format, is a professional media container designed for video, audio, timecode, metadata, and broadcast-specific information. Sony XDCAM and Panasonic P2 cameras commonly record MXF files; Avid Media Composer, Adobe Premiere Pro, and DaVinci Resolve can also export them.
MXF files may contain MPEG-2, AVC-Intra, DV, JPEG 2000, or other codecs, so the .mxf extension alone does not determine the video compression. You typically encounter MXF footage after copying files from a broadcast camera card, receiving material from a television production, or exporting from professional editing software.
What the MJPG format is
MJPG normally means Motion JPEG: each video frame is stored as a separate JPEG image. It is a video codec rather than a single mandatory container; MJPEG is commonly stored in an AVI file with the .avi extension and the MJPG codec identifier.
Because frames are independent, MJPEG is easy for some older video applications to decode, edit frame by frame, or use for image extraction. It does not provide inter-frame compression, so an MJPEG file is often much larger than the original MXF, H.264, or HEVC file at comparable visual quality.
How to convert MXF to MJPG
Using the online converter
- Open the free converter on 101convert.com and choose the video conversion tool.
- Upload the MXF file and select MJPG as the output format. If the site asks for a container, choose AVI.
- Start the conversion, then download the resulting file and test it in the application that requires MJPEG.
Online conversion is practical for ordinary files, but large professional MXF recordings can take significant upload and processing time. Do not upload confidential footage unless the project permits use of an online service.
Using FFmpeg on a desktop
FFmpeg gives direct control over the MJPEG quality and audio format. Convert the first video stream and compatible audio to an AVI file with:
ffmpeg -i input.mxf -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a? -c:v mjpeg -q:v 3 -c:a pcm_s16le output.avi
In FFmpeg, lower -q:v values produce higher MJPEG quality and larger files. Values from 2 to 5 are a practical starting range. Use -an instead of the audio options when the destination needs video only:
ffmpeg -i input.mxf -map 0:v:0 -c:v mjpeg -q:v 3 -an output.avi
To convert every video stream rather than only the first one, replace -map 0:v:0 with -map 0:v; this may create an output that older players cannot open. Verify the result with:
ffprobe output.avi
Quality and compatibility limits
The conversion cannot restore detail already lost in the MXF source. MJPEG re-encodes every frame, so use a low quantizer such as -q:v 2 when preserving quality matters, and inspect the file for blocking or mosquito noise before deleting the original.
PCM audio makes AVI broadly compatible but consumes more space than compressed audio. Some older applications accept only MJPEG with specific pixel formats, frame rates, or resolutions; if the output is rejected, inspect the application requirements before adding options such as -r 25, -r 29.97, or a scaling filter.
MXF metadata, broadcast timecode, clip markers, subtitles, multiple audio tracks, and camera-specific sidecar relationships may not survive the conversion. Keep the original MXF when those elements are needed for later editing or archiving.
