Free online MXF to FLV converter

Legacy Flash-based players, older streaming systems, and some embedded web applications accept FLV but not broadcast-oriented MXF. Converting requires transcoding the MXF video and audio into codecs supported by the FLV container, usually H.264 video with AAC audio.

What the MXF format is

MXF, or Material Exchange Format, is a professional media container designed for video, audio, timecode, and production metadata. It is common in broadcast ingest, camera recording, post-production, and newsroom workflows rather than consumer playback.

Sony XDCAM, Panasonic P2, Canon professional cameras, and other broadcast devices create MXF files. Avid Media Composer, Adobe Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, and specialist broadcast systems also import or export MXF. The extension can contain different codecs and structures, including OP1a files with interleaved tracks and OP-Atom files that separate media components.

What the FLV format is

FLV, or Flash Video, is a legacy container made for Adobe Flash Player and older web-streaming platforms. It can store video encoded with H.264, Sorenson Spark, or VP6 and audio encoded with AAC or MP3.

FLV files were useful when websites and embedded players depended on Flash because they supported progressive download, streaming, and relatively small files. Flash Player has been discontinued, so FLV is now mainly required by legacy software, archived web projects, or older hardware and streaming systems. Modern browsers generally work better with MP4/H.264 or WebM.

How to actually convert MXF to FLV

Using FFmpeg

FFmpeg is the most controllable desktop option and can read many MXF variants. Install a current FFmpeg build, place the source file in a working folder, and run:

ffmpeg -i input.mxf -c:v libx264 -preset medium -crf 23 -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 48000 -f flv output.flv

Replace input.mxf with the source filename and output.flv with the desired output name. The command re-encodes video to H.264, audio to AAC, and writes an FLV container. Lower CRF values produce higher video quality and larger files; a practical range is 18 to 28.

To convert only the first video and audio streams, which avoids accidentally including extra channels or data tracks, use:

ffmpeg -i input.mxf -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0 -c:v libx264 -crf 23 -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:a aac -b:a 128k -f flv output.flv

For an interlaced MXF recording intended for progressive playback, deinterlace during encoding:

ffmpeg -i input.mxf -vf yadif -c:v libx264 -crf 23 -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:a aac -b:a 128k -f flv output.flv

Check the input streams before conversion with:

ffprobe input.mxf

The output can be checked with ffprobe output.flv or opened in VLC. If the source has multiple audio tracks, use additional -map options or select the required track in a desktop FFmpeg front end.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

FLV does not preserve every MXF feature. Broadcast metadata, edit lists, essence labels, camera metadata, timecode relationships, captions, 10-bit precision, alpha channels, and complex multichannel audio may be discarded or altered. Test the converted file in the exact legacy player or server that will use it.

Use yuv420p for broad H.264 compatibility. Some older FLV players require MP3 rather than AAC audio; if AAC playback fails, try:

FLV is not a suitable preservation format, and it is usually a poor choice for current websites. Choose MP4 or WebM instead unless a specific legacy application or delivery system requires FLV.
