Free online MXF to M2TS converter

MXF files from professional cameras and broadcast systems often cannot be opened by consumer video players, Blu-ray authoring tools, or AVCHD-compatible devices. Converting them to M2TS produces an MPEG transport stream that is more suitable for Blu-ray-style playback, home media servers, and some editing applications.

What the MXF format is

MXF, or Material Exchange Format, is a professional container designed to preserve video, audio, timecode, metadata, and sometimes multiple essence streams in production workflows. Sony XDCAM, Panasonic P2, Canon professional cameras, broadcast servers, and applications such as Avid Media Composer, Adobe Premiere Pro, and DaVinci Resolve commonly create MXF files.

MXF is a container rather than a single codec. Its contents may include MPEG-2, AVC-Intra, DNxHD, DNxHR, JPEG 2000, PCM audio, and other professional formats. Some MXF recordings use an OP-Atom structure with separate video and audio files, while OP1a files commonly contain several streams in one file.

What the M2TS format is

M2TS is an MPEG-2 Transport Stream variant used by Blu-ray video, AVCHD cameras, and many Blu-ray-compatible devices. It can carry video, audio, subtitles, timing information, and multiple programs in a stream designed for playback over storage media or networks.

M2TS is useful when a player or authoring program expects an MPEG transport stream instead of MXF. Common video codecs include H.264/AVC and MPEG-2; common audio codecs include AC-3, AAC, and Blu-ray LPCM. The .m2ts extension identifies the file, but does not guarantee that its streams meet Blu-ray or AVCHD specifications.

How to convert MXF to M2TS

You can convert the file free on 101convert.com without installing software. For batch work, detailed stream selection, or predictable codec settings, FFmpeg is more suitable.

First inspect the source with:

ffprobe input.mxf

Look for the video codec, frame rate, dimensions, audio codec, channel count, and sample rate. If the existing streams are accepted by the intended player, try a stream-copy conversion:

ffmpeg -i input.mxf -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a? -c copy -f mpegts output.m2ts

This avoids quality loss and is fast, but it can fail when the MXF contains PCM or another codec that the target device does not support. In that case, transcode to broadly compatible H.264 video and AC-3 audio:

ffmpeg -i input.mxf -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a? -c:v libx264 -preset medium -crf 18 -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:a ac3 -b:a 384k -ar 48000 -f mpegts output.m2ts

-map 0:v:0 selects the first video stream, while -map 0:a? includes available audio without failing when no audio exists. Lower CRF values increase H.264 quality and file size; a value around 18 is visually high quality, while values around 20–23 produce smaller files. Use a separate output filename for each source to avoid overwriting the MXF.

In a graphical editor, import the MXF, place it on a timeline, then choose Export or Deliver and select an MPEG transport stream preset. Set the container or format to MPEG-TS, choose H.264 for video and AC-3 or AAC for audio, then enter an .m2ts output filename. Preset names differ between applications; selecting a generic MPEG-TS export is not the same as generating a complete Blu-ray disc structure.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

Stream copying preserves the original compressed video exactly, but remuxing cannot make an unsupported codec compatible. Transcoding changes the video and may introduce generation loss; use a high-quality CRF or a production mezzanine workflow when further editing is required.

For Blu-ray authoring, verify the required resolution, frame rate, H.264 profile and level, bitrate, audio format, and GOP structure. A file that plays in VLC may still be rejected by a Blu-ray authoring application. FFmpeg's -f mpegts option creates an MPEG transport stream file, not the BDMV folder hierarchy, playlist files, menus, or disc image required for a finished Blu-ray.

Check interlaced footage carefully. Professional MXF sources may be 1080i or use broadcast frame rates; forcing -pix_fmt yuv420p does not deinterlace them. Preserve interlacing when the target device expects it, or apply a deliberate deinterlace filter such as -vf bwdif before encoding when progressive output is required.
