Game video stored in CRI Middleware’s USM container is not directly accepted by most editors or Blu-ray tools. Converting it to M2TS requires extracting the encoded streams first, then remuxing or transcoding them into an MPEG transport stream.

What the USM format is

USM is a proprietary video container used by CRI Middleware’s CriMovie system, especially in console, PC, and mobile games for cutscenes, trailers, menus, and other prerecorded video.

Games commonly distribute USM content as files such as movie.usm or numbered segments. The container may include video, multiple language tracks, subtitles, alpha channels, and CRI-specific metadata. Some game releases also encrypt or obfuscate the streams, so a normal media player or FFmpeg usually cannot open the file directly.

USM files are created by CRI Middleware encoding tools rather than ordinary consumer video applications. You normally encounter them inside a game installation, extracted game archive, or modding project.

What the M2TS format is

M2TS is an MPEG-2 Transport Stream variant used by Blu-ray Disc structures, AVCHD cameras, broadcast workflows, and some media servers. It carries packetized video, audio, subtitles, and timing information in a transport stream.

M2TS is suitable when a device, authoring application, or playback system specifically expects a Blu-ray-compatible transport stream. It can contain codecs such as H.264/AVC, MPEG-2 Video, HEVC, AAC, AC-3, and DTS, but compatibility depends on the target device and Blu-ray profile.

The .m2ts extension alone does not make a file Blu-ray compliant. Blu-ray authoring may also require specific stream parameters, playlists, clip information, and directory structures.

How to actually convert USM to M2TS

FFmpeg cannot normally decode a USM file directly. Use a USM extraction tool first, then use FFmpeg to create the M2TS output.

  1. Make a working copy of the USM file and confirm that all numbered segments from the same video are available.
  2. Extract the USM streams with a tool that supports CRI Movie files, such as a current USM extractor or USM Toolkit. If the file is encrypted, use the decryption option only when you have the right to access the content.
  3. Inspect the extracted files. The video may be saved as a raw or intermediate stream, while audio may be extracted as HCA, ADX, WAV, or another CRI-specific format. HCA and some other CRI audio formats may require a separate decoder before FFmpeg can use them.
  4. Convert unsupported audio to a standard format such as WAV or encode it directly with a compatible decoder. Keep the extracted video unchanged when its codec and parameters are accepted by the destination device.
  5. Remux compatible streams into M2TS without re-encoding. For example, if the extractor produced a playable H.264 video file and an AAC audio file, run:

ffmpeg -i video.h264 -i audio.aac -map 0:v:0 -map 1:a:0 -c:v copy -c:a copy -f mpegts output.m2ts

Some raw video streams lack timestamps, duration, or a container header. In that case, place the video in an intermediate container first, or transcode it while creating the transport stream:

ffmpeg -i extracted_video.mkv -i extracted_audio.wav -map 0:v:0 -map 1:a:0 -c:v libx264 -preset medium -crf 18 -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:a ac3 -b:a 384k -ar 48000 -f mpegts output.m2ts

The second command is more broadly compatible, but it re-encodes the video and can reduce quality. Replace the input names with the files produced by the USM extractor. Use -map 0:v:0 and -map 1:a:0 carefully when the extraction produced multiple video or audio tracks.

For a no-installation attempt, the free converter on 101convert.com can be used if its USM input handler accepts the specific file. Encrypted, segmented, or game-protected USM files commonly require local extraction before an online converter can process the media.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

Remuxing with -c:v copy preserves the extracted video bitstream; it does not improve quality or remove USM encryption. Transcoding with libx264 makes the result more compatible but introduces generation loss.

USM may contain separate audio and video tracks with timing information that an extractor must preserve. If audio drifts after conversion, use the extractor’s synchronization options or inspect timestamps before transcoding rather than simply concatenating the tracks.

A USM file can contain proprietary codecs, encrypted content, subtitles, or multiple language streams that the chosen extractor cannot recover. Missing audio, subtitles, or alternate angles cannot be recreated by FFmpeg.

For Blu-ray playback, check the target authoring program’s requirements for frame rate, resolution, level, reference frames, audio codec, and bitrate. A generic M2TS file may play in VLC or a media server while still failing in a Blu-ray authoring workflow.
